Excited

I never thought I would be so excited at aiming to being debt free.I bet it doesnt last. lol

I posted my SOA a while ago and got some great advice. However instead of becoming debt free 5 years down the line. We have decided to move out of our house and move 250miles to live with my parents, so we could be debt free within a year.

I dont know if I am lucky that we have this opportunity, or sad that my partner will be working away from home and only seeing myself and our child at weekends. I will be fine being with my family and have always wanted to go home, but my OH hates the travel and living out of hotels as he cant even make a slice of taste. (lol thats what he misses!). However we think its for the best as we are sick of struggling.

I cant wait till the first pay day without having to spend nigh on 1k in rent, it will be tempting not to blow it. No I really put it all into the high interest credit card.:o

My question is though, what fair rent would be good to give my parents.?They say they dont want any, but I wouldnt do this. It would be for myself and child and the OH every other weekend. Hmmm

Thanks for reading.

    Hiya,

I'm in a similar situation. I'm moving in with my BF's parents end of Aug, but we only plan on staying 2-3 months max until we have saved a couple of grand.

They also have said they don't want any money but we're thinking of giving them £200 per month to cover extra bills and we're going to buy our own food as we'll be home erratic hours and it seems unfair to expect to be catered for!

This still means we'll have aprox £3,500 saved by the time we move back out if we stay 3 months.

    Seems fair to us.
    Best of luck

But I will get it over with sooner!!

    Thanks Vix.

Yes it does seem a good option.

I was thinking maybe around 300 as we will probably eat with my parents, also I will buy extra groceries to.

I cant wait to be debt free.

    Debt-free and Proud!
    Hi Rebecca01
I think you're doing an amazing thing, and having worked away from home myself, the months go by amazingly fast. And there's always the internet to keep in touch :D Just think of how much you will have to look forward to!

But I was going to say, hotels are reaaally pricey.... i was lucky enough to find lodgings with a family near to where I worked (a converted garage!!) which meant I had a cooker, sink, washing machine, en suite and wifi, for much much less than a hotel, and didn't have to pack up my stuff every weekend. Could be worth looking?

Great to hear Rebecca, I remember commenting on your original post(s)... You're very lucky to have this opportunity, many other people just don't have this option available to them, particularly married with children families, mainly seems to be students :]

£300 seems like a good figure - though your parents are clearly supportive and if they are refusing money I bet they're just happy you'll sort yourself out and that that is payment enough for them - what lovely peoples; the type of parent I hope to be to my children when they're older..

    Thanks Mrs.Tus.

Yes my parents are great. I will have to remember this when I get annoyed over things such as what time will you be back? lol. I agree I would like to be like them to my daughter when I am older.

Debt free in a year, I hope we can do it.

The fairest way is to divide the rent/council tax/ electric between the amount of adults in the house...
Or if they are refusing to accept money why not put a little away a month and when you move out send them on an all inclusive holiday that they will enjoy!
    29th June -Beginning Credit Score 422 :( £2575
    12th July - Credit score 471 :p
22nd August - Credit Score 550 :p Still very poor just but only just!
    Remaining to pay off: £1370.95

Thanks for that DarnIt. They own their house outright so a third of the bills would only be about 60 pounds.
Good idea with saving it for them though. They arent really sun holiday people but there are other things they would like that I could save for. Though I think I may try just transferring it into their bank account. That way they cant refuse. Thanks again.

We moved in with the inlaws for 6 months and while it wasn't ideal, it let us save a lot of money and has helped us get the money together for a house deposit (we'd managed to pay off our debts already).

We contributed £250/mth towards the food and bills and this seemed like a reasonable figure. Our current food and utility bills in a rented flat are almost exactly £250/mth for the two of us and they would have been paying the mortgage/council tax regardless of whether or not we were there!

My advice would be to make sure that you and OH get family time when he is home, as it can sometimes feel a little claustrophobic moving back to the family home after a spell away.

Thanks yes this does seem like a good amount, and it will help us pay off all the debt and start some savings.
No it wont be ideal and yes I think we will be having a few weekends away at OH's hotel, if he has to work a weekend.
