Career Break Approved, then not. In a pickle!

    regardless of policy, I think expecting them to hold it for three years is crazy, no doubt they think the same. Just go and enjoy the experience and worry about it IF and when you come back to UK

    It was a bad mistake, but to be honest, she may as well resign. I would never expect a company to hold a position for three years, and I'm quite surprised that - given you say you probably won't come back - you expect them to hold it open for you for that long.

    Quit, go, enjoy your time abroad and the chances are that everything will be different *if* you come back!

  • A 3 yr break sounds stupid to me and cant imagine even the nhs approving it, why not just resign either way then look for a job when you got back, either way its a 3yr gap on your cv

    Career breaks recognize that some 'talent' would come back to the employer rather than a looking for a totally new hire.

    NHS staff are often expensively trained and until recently a number of jobs were on the shortage occupations for immigration purposes - Intensive Care Nurses, General Nurses etc

    The jobs are often not held as such but 'churn' means that in x years time a comparable role will be available.

    I don't know in what circumstances people in the NHS apply for and get a 3 yr career break, but I would imagine that its more than likely linked to having children and wanting to be at home before they start school.

    In all honestly I think it was pushing your luck a little to apply for a career break in your personal circumstances; I would have though it more appropriate for her to have resigned.

    Following a partner to an overseas assignment falls into career breaks.

    Actualy this policy is an example of the horendous waste in the NHS.

    Every organisation need to have a career break policy along with loads of other policies.

    They are nearly all identical but each organisation has produced their own MASSIVE duplication and cost.

    I really don't see what your problem is. Are you SERIOUSLY implying that if she didn't get her career break authorised, you weren't going to go? From here it looks just like, ok you didn't get a perk you hoped for, but it makes no material difference to your plans.
