Bit of help with temping

Hi,

I'm a student trying to make a bit of money over the summer but really struggling to find something temporary. A friend suggested temping but I wondered if anyone could recommend any good agencies in Bristol/Bath?

Ideally I would want something that would be a week or two at a time rather than a 6 month temporary contract.

I am looking for call centre/admin/general office based work.

If I register with an agency would they contact me to say "we have a weeks work here" or would they be jobs I would see on the website and apply for?

Thanks for reading!!

  • It can be both! when I joined agencies as a new graduate, I registered for quite a few and they all had different approaches, but I'd say in this market, if you see something go for it and don't wait for them to contact you.

    Best of luck!

Register with agencies like Reed, Pertemps, Manpower or Office Angels. Don't wait for them to call you either because you will be waiting a long time, you need to be proactive and call them ideally first thing on a Monday to ask if they have anything and at the same time let them know you are available. Ring again mid-week.

You could approach your Uni HR Dept as they may well have their own in-house peripatetics where you can be sent to different departments on a short term basis to do office work etc.

I think there's also Randstad in Bristol (and elsewhere). Each agency may specialise in a different area, eg Randstad used to do a lot of Third Sector work (charities, housing associations etc).

And again on Friday: "Do you have anything for me for next week?" Actually you may find it better to go in at regular intervals, smiling pleasantly, just to keep your face remembered.

If you're not a Bristol / Bath student, it's still worth looking at their careers office websites: temporary jobs are registered there. And you may find that the local council and local hospitals either run their own temping pool, or have an 'arrangement' with one of the agencies.

HOWEVER, you may find that agencies aren't registering new workers, especially with not much experience.

Google agencies in bristol or bath, there should be a fair few but depending on the work you want id only register with the agencies who cover the work your interested in.

Short term assignments tend to be to cover holidays and sick leave so are unlikely to be advertised. The best thing is to get registered with a few agencies. There is a list here of ones in the Bristol area that have admin temp jobs (I cannot vouch for how up to date it is though) I would recommend choosing smaller agencies rather than (inter)national names.
Once you have registered don't call every day. I think calling Monday morning to check in and Thursday or Friday when agencies may have taken bookings from comapnies needing someone for the monday
