You've posted on the wrong board, but heres my tuppence worth anyway!

Personally, i'd check out https://www.dell.co.uk/outlet and look for a Dell 6400 - you can select exactly what you want from the drop downs on the main screen.

If at first you don't succeed... try again at a really odd time, i've got some really good bargains there at 5 o'clock in them morning or last thing at night, they do 'drops' periodically throughout the day.

They make noises about the machines being 'refurbished' but they are almost always completely as new and reboxed if required.

Also check out some of the power sellers on ebay - type in Dell 6400. Guys like 'thechef' (i think!) are massive dell sellers and are very reliable. One or two sellers add vat (but only a few) so look out for that in their adverts.

Also, Dell themselves now sell on ebay, so keep an eye out for them too - i think they trade as 'dell_outlet' or something like that

OK I wouldn't touch a Dell lappy with a bargepole as a guy i supported needed his one to have the mainboard replaced within 3 months and they wouldn't just swap it - it is still glitchy after a year

I would go to hot deals and get at least a £50 off aka 10% off £500 machine there - some of us actually got 2 codes off and i am typing on my v6133eu that cost me £404 - very happy with it and still in currys

  • http://www.dixons.co.uk/product.php?sku=692221 - one core duo laptop for £449. I would NOT recommend it though.
They give with one hand, but take with the other - it only has 256mb ram and no dvd writer.
They're onto core2duo now anyway - thats already out of date if you were hoping for latest spec.

I agree with pgilc1..The Dell 6400 is a good buy, if you can get one at a price you can afford.

I'd suggest asking your son to contribute to it if he is insistent he has a core2 duo.
Or are you willing to go for a lower processor?
Laptops of a good spec, 1gb ram, dvd writer etc, are easily findable for under £450 if you're not fussed about having one of Intel's absolute latest processors.

I've had bad experiences with most brands of laptop at some point or another - Samsung, Dell, Fujitsu, HP, Sony.. you have to buy from someone.

If anyone is wondering, I'd say the worst for support is Sony. They discontinue models all the time, and if its more than a year old - theres probably no mention of it at all online. Plus all the parts are non-standard. It's the price you pay for having a Vaio ever so slightly smaller than a standard laptop.

I know someone who had a Dell PC delivered with a faulty hard disk - the machine would randomly stop for no reason, and Dell's own diagnostics tools reported the drive as faulty, and advised to call them for a replacement.
Dell suggested ignoring their software, and that the machine needed a reload (brand new - just been delivered). After this had been done, they tried denying the faulty hard disk was faulty, despite the machine being unusable.

In this case, people needed to know their rights. The machine had just been delivered.
I wouldn't have been phoning asking IF they could help - I'd have been straight on saying that unless they sent me an engineer in 48 hours, I'd be sending it back. At less than 7 days old (from the time you received it), you can return it under the distance selling agreement for a full refund.
In the case of your friend, I'd call them every hour. When they tell you they'll call you back in 2 - call them back in 1.

I'd say Dell is the best you'll get at the prices they charge though. And the hardware is generally reliable.

Choose Viking Direct Business and search for Toshiba Laptop

The toshiba Satellite A100-207 looks a good buy with Core Duo T2500, 1 Gig Ram, 15.4 inch and 120 GB HDD

the price displayed is £499.99 (this does not include VAT though), it's £587 with VAT, but using a code in the Vouchers Section you get 20% off everything, so effectively you would be getting this laptop for £469.99, great price for a great spec'd laptop

*Code Expires on teh 30th of this month, so be quick if you want to get this deal
  • We bought my son a Compaq from PC World - £450 - dual core - he thinks it's great.

    It's on Hot UK Deals

Update: This code says it expired on the 14/12/06 although the Hot Deals site claims it's until 30/12/06.
