How to find previous tenants?

I moved here in march and since June we have had debt collectors and letters trying to trace the previous occupants, i got annoyed and opened one of her letters from moorcroft and lets just say she owes more than twice my annual income:eek:
It got too much yesterday evening when i caught another bailiff company trying to enter through my bathroom window , he got very nasty and was pushing me out of my own house and slammed the door in my face, i had to call the police to get them removed i also had to show my I.D to prove it was me, they had collected up all my stuff they had no I.D either just some faxed letter about this debt of a previous tenant.
How on earth do i go about tracing this blinking woman???

Hi Lauren that sounds horrendous, I am pretty sure it's not your responsibility to trace the previous tennant and that the heavies have no right to enter your home. I am sure someone who knows will be along soon but in the meantime have a look at the articles referred to at the top of the board or contact citizens advice to find out what you can do to stop this from happening again.

Its for them to trace her not you. Now you have produced your ID you should not hear anything more from the bailiffs who called yesterday as they have now seen the evidence that you are not the person they are looking for. While not condoning the actions of the bailiff, I do understand that until they see evidence to the contrary, they will assume that the person living in the property is the person they are seeking as saying you are not that person is not proof that it is true. However, they now know you are not who they are looking for.

They should now start to trace her and leave you alone.
  • Are you on the electoral roll as living at that address? This is where they would get their info from.
If they enter your house again, call the police - I'm sure they could be arrested for burglary (ps don't open other people's mail - it's against the law!)
  • You don't need to trace the previous tenants. If you receive letters addressed to them, put them back in the post unopened marked 'Not at this address, return to sender'. If you get letters addressed to the occupier and they are for the previous tenant, seal them back up and return them to sender. You don't need to put a stamp on, just cross out your address and mark the envelope RTS.

Don't allow bailiffs to enter your home. You might want to keep ID and proof of your occupancy of the house (a tenancy agreement, for example) handy to show anyone else who comes to the door.

  • Contact the landlord either through the agent if you're with one, or privately. You have a right to live peacefully and say so.

These idiots can only enter a property with a court order. If they try again call the police to them and have them charged with aggrevated burglary. If they have taken any of your stuff go to their office demand it back plus compensatation for stress caused or you will take the company to court (one of my neighbours done this when bailifs went through an unlocked door (house unoccupied) took stuff and left a note!!)

Personally, if they tried to come in through the window again I'd hit hit fingers hard with a rolling pin - after all, anyone is legally entitled to protect their property and personal safety

Echoing other comments - it is NOT your responsibility to trace the alleged 'debtor' but it IS the responsibility of any Debt Collector or Bailiff to ensure that they are dealing with the CORRECT person.
By acting the way that they have done, they are breaking EVERY guideline, laid down by the Office of Fair Trading, to which they should adhere.
The Police, also, should have instructed these criminals to amend their records and to cease forthwith this illegal harrassment and bullying.
Unfortunately DCA's and 'BAILIFFS' seem to think that not only are they above the law, but that they actually make the law.
I note that the DCA named on the letter was MOORCROFT - they are particularily well known for their total disregard of the rights of others.
