I have learnt to live without.......

Hello everyone.... haven't posted in ages but have read all the lovely threads on here and have enjoyed them lots. I have been thinking about the New Year and what I want to change or more to the point what I can give up without too much hassle so that I can save money.....

For for the past year I have not bought or used FABRIC CONDITIONER….(.I know some people love this stuff and cannot live without it) but I can honestly say have never missed it and my IRONING is just as easy and I am helping the environment a little! I certainly do not miss the "nice" artificial smell and have learnt to live without the big fluffy towels. Oh and I am only using vinegar once in a blue moon as I dont often remember to put it into the washing in time........:rotfl:

Anybody out there got any ideas what I can give up this year?

HAPPY MSE NEW YEAR EVERYONE

I agree with the fabric softner thing! Load of rubbish! Although I am moving to re-useable nappies next year when babe comes, so am planning on getting the dryer balls from Lakeland to fluff up the nappies and my towels.

Thats my "give up" for 2007 - disposable nappies!
  • I have given up washing powder and fabric conditioner (about 10 years ago now). Also gave up using deodorant (about 10 years ago, too.)

I want to give up shampoo this year and will be experimenting with soap nuts that I've just bought. I also want to give up dishwasher tablets once I find a good substitute - I tried Stardrops in there but the result was very poor.

WOw that is an amazing list..... I am really impressed.... just one question, do you use anything instead of deodorant that you can recommend or do you go totally without all year?

I cannot stand fabric conditioner, and never use it. We spent the weekend with the in laws a couple of months ago & MiL washed our dirty gym kit with fabric softener. Yuck! It felt all slimy & smelt hideous - I had to wash it again when we got home.

This year I am going to try to give up carrier bags, I do have some reusable "bag for life" ones, but always forget to take them with me to the supermarket. This year I WILL try harder.....

I don't use fabric softener, it makes towels too soft and they don't dry you properly. I don't iron much anyway so I don't know if it helps.

I agree about the bags, I have loads in the car for Tesco and often forget to take them in I must try harder too.

I snap a dishwasher tablet in half and use vinegar (white) as a rinse aid.
I also mix cheapest washing powder with a box of more expensive stuff ( keep it in the expensive box so DDs do not notice).

Keep expensive handwash container and fill it with bubble bath (i litre for about 60 pence.) Handwash is a pound for 300 ml depending what you buy.

Wooligan 2 squares for smoky - 3 squares for HTA
    Preemie hats - 2.
  • I have also given up using fabric softener and I haven't noticed any difference in my washing.

We get brainwashed by cleaning product manufacturers telling us that if we don't use XYZ products, then our homes will be dirty and full of germs and we are putting our family's health at risk.

Well, that is rubbish. As has been shown on this board, there is an OS remedy for everything which is also cheaper and better for the environment.
  • I was just thinking about my old mum and I wonder what she would have made of 'fabric conditioner' she would have said whats wrong with hanging your washing on the line in the garden to dry,it then smells of 'fresh air' which is free.
It's true when you think about it .manufacturers make things then persuade us that we can't do without them .I don't use fabric conditioners as I just think they are a wastse of money to be honest. What other thing can you think of which have been 'introduced' over the past few years that we can do without I can think of several
    Tinned custard
    electric toothbrushes
ready peeled potatoes, doh really hard to do that one
frozen omelette's for goodness sake how much effort is required to whip up a couple of eggs ?
    any other ideas ??
