DON'T BUY IT!.
This is something I've been slowly learning over recent months. Yes, I know somethings you have to buy but next time you're about to buy (insert name of item you "waste" money on here) stop and think of this then DON'T BUY IT!
Seriously, you'll be debt free quicker and won't have a house full of (insert name of item etc).

This is my biggest problem. When I physically don't have any money in the account I'm not that bothered but as soon as I have a little spare my brain conjures up any number of things I just 'have' to have.
There is hope though, I think I'm definitely getting better at resisting impulse purchases, and I'm selling all of my junk on ebay to try to reclaim some of the money from my past impulse spends.

Hovel-lady, I so agree. While all the advice about switching credit cards around for better rates, looking for stuff available on 0%, consolidating loans, etc, has its place, the simple piece of advice 'Just stop spending it' can sometimes be overlooked. The thing with a capitalist system is that once everyone who can afford to buy stuff had already bought it, the only way for profits to continue growing was to ensure that the people who couldn't afford it could also buy it. So the genius idea of credit was born.....let's lend them the money so they can buy it (helping company profits) while also charging the people who couldn't afford the item in the first place more money on the loan (helping company profits still further). The ultimate disaster from this practice being of course the banking crash caused by all the sub-prime mortgage lending that was going on in the U.S. Well, in our house, we've decided we're not a special charity for making rich shareholders richer at our own expense & security. I once said about Old-Style that I enjoyed the feeling that I was fighting the system a little through the medium of mince & lentils, and I still do enjoy it, especially as the debts have now gone! Power to the people!!2026's challenges: 1) To rebuild our Emergency Fund to at least £5k.
2) To read 50 books (12/50) 3) The Re-Shrinking of Foxgloves 8.1kg/30kg
Remember....if you have to put it on a credit card, extend your overdraft or take out a loan to buy whatever it is, you probably can't afford it, as that's not your money, it's somebody else's!0
