Burnt kettle

My electric kettle switched itself on with just a bit of water in it. Thankfully the element is ok but the inside was all soot. I've tried to scrub it off with washing up liquid and a scourer but there are still bits I can't get to.
Anyone know of something I will have in my home that I could clean it out with ? Thanks for any help.

Hi
You could try boiling a vinegar / water mix in it a few times.
That may help.:D0 -

 Blimeh!
Just a thought, but isn't that a bit dangerous. If my kettle switched itself on (say if something is accidentally resting on the switch and it couldn't switch itself off when the kettle boiled) I think it has an automatic cut out before anything like soot could be produced.
Like I say, only a thought though. Would something like lime-scale remover work?

Most electric kettles have a safety cut out which kicks in so that the kettle doesn't burn itself out and cause a fire. But I agree, having a kettle that swicthes itself ON is extremely dangerous. I'd bin it.TL0
