Competancy based questions

Does anyone have any general tips on these? I absolutely hate them and I can never seem to fit in all the info I want

Especially the one where you're just given a heading like 'communication' and then have to figure the rest out yourself - If you've done a civil service job application you'll know what I mean!

Just read their definition of communication, and then answer it with your experience. THe key is to tick all the boxes here to make the sift.

If you dont have enough room, or it is clear there isnt enough, then typing into a separate sheet of paper is normally allowed.

Quite simply, ask yourself "when have I done this well?" Referring to the competency you're talking about.

Talk about yourself, refer to a specific example. Outline the situation briefly. Talk about what you did, what the outcome was, what you learned.

' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".

Exactly! don't repeat more than one example and try to be varied in your responses. When (hopefully) it comes to interview, do the same thing under each of the headings and think of two really good meaty examples under each so you're not thrown by the questions.

    Good luck!

    Use the STAR approach...

Situation: What were you faced with?

    Task: What was required?

Action: What did you do to address situation / task?

    Result: Describe (hopefully) positive outcome.

When writing, it is important to have the emphasis on what you as an individual did, so use "I" not "we" in your examples.

    Good luck.
