Extra Work - cash payment do I need to declare?

Hi can anybody advise? I work part-time hours in my main job (18hr) and am now doing a bit of typing on an 'as and when' basis for one of my consultants outside of work, paid on an hourly basis and they've asked me to complete a timesheet so they can submit it legally through their books. However, they have paid me cash in hand for the work I've done so far amounting to £40 for a month's worth of typing. I know that next month I will not get anywhere near as much as this maybe only £10 as the typing comes in drips and drops. What do I need to do regarding declaring this for tax pursposes and also for my benefits claim (I currently receive tax credits and housing benefit) ? I assume that if my consultant is running it through their books there will be trail leading to me and want it to be above board ! Many thanks
