From my point of view as a customer it is a problem, and as Nectar indicated to me, so do they. Almost all the major companies are falling over themselves to try and attract new business and new money. Perhaps because I am a retailer myself and the company that I am franchised to are very keen not to put obstacles in peoples way, it seems an odd situation to place yourself in when, and I agree that Sainsbury's along with all other retailers process a lot of transactions every day, they wont be all be for folks redeeming their Nectar points. If I have a money off voucher for a product that I get on line or through a mail shot or whatever, I can take that into Sainsbury's and they will scan it and give me that money off my bill there and then. Where is this that much of a difference. I can only reiterate that it was a problem for me, and to be honest makes their systems look inadequate. They can add the points on at the point of sale but not let you redeem earned points when you as a customer decide to do so. This is second rate service (whatever the reasons why). Check out Nectars website and Sainsbury's is plastered all over it.
It is, as with most things, the principle that is involved here and I can't just accept that "thats the way it is" . If there wasn't a problem then why are they both working together to resolve this issue. Why don't they advertise this basic trading policy so that customers understand the problem when shopping in a branch they have not been to before. As I said, for someone who has to look at this from both ends, I think personally there is a problem between them and until they can actually tell me why this policy is in place then you can't convince me that there isn't

Sainsbury's Digestives with Chocolate Chips however do deserve the highest praise imaginable !!!!

Ive worked for 2 JS stores and never had a customer get upset when they couldnt redeem they're nectar points off some shopping because the store wasnt they're home store. I was actually at sainsburys when nectar was brought out and was there for 4 years and cant say i heard any customers unhappy they couldnt redeem they're points.

A lady two behind me at the customer service desk had exactly the same problem and felt the same way except her angst may have been caused by her 3 screaming kids

It's to try and clamp down on the amount of people frauding/stealing, because if somebody manages to steal your nectar card, its highly unlikely that they will try and use the nectar card in the store they have just stolen from, and if they were to go to a different Sainsburys, chances are it isn't a home store so they wouldnt be able to redeem the points etcetc. Just another (annoying, but kinda useful) way to stop people getting your points!

In my experience, people who steal cards etc try and use them as fast as possible and then throw or destroy them so in actual fact they are more likely to use the same store. And if they happen to know the policy then that is very likely to happen.

Strange that Sainsbury's didn't tell me that and when I specifically asked if it was a security issue they said no !!!!

Be that as it may I am going to redeem in my local store tomorrow my accrued Nectar points (providing they let me of course) and I will stock up with the aforementioned Digestives and have a long hard think about J.Sainsbury's trading terms and conditions.

They are a business, they will have worked out how much it will cost to fix it vs how much money they will lose from customers by not fixing it.

Plus to back up what DCFC79 says, I never had a single customer complain about it when I worked there.
