Wescott debt collection company nightmare!

Hi there

Hopefully someone can help!

I have a debt with a phone company from last year for £40 that I was unaware of, this has been passed onto Wescott Credit Services. I paid the outstanding balance to Wescott.

The outstanding £40 is showing on my credit file as a default, and wescott said they cannot correct this? I don't understand! I understand the debt is on my credit file under 'Everyone Everywhere' but surely now the debt is paid it should be removed??

I'm really confused, I have a few payment plans set up with various debt collection companies in order to try and get my credit file in a more decent state but it just looks like I'll be paying these and there will be no change to my file at the end! :(

Please someone shed some light :(

Defaults are not removed when you pay off the outstanding amount.

They stay for 6 years on your report from the "default date".

Instead the credit report entry should be updated to show that the debt is now settled/satisfied, and that the outstanding balance is now zero.

    sorry, yes - that's what I mean.

I understand that it will still show, but as paid as opposed to unpaid as it currently is showing.

They are saying they cannot update anything to do with my file.

They are saying they cannot update anything to do with my file.

That's nonsense - they can certainly update the fact that you've satisfied the debt, even though you defaulted.

Still, creditors/DCAs can be incredibly slow at updating these things - took me 6 months to get the word 'satisfied' added to my only defaulted account and the closing balance still shows up incorrectly...

Wescot cannot correct it themselves, as the credit reference file (CRF) entry is still in the name of the mobile operator.

They are they only ones with the power to amend it as it stands.

However, on settlement of the debt Wesoct should have contacted the phone company who would then amend the CRFs accordingly.

Maybe they have done this, but the phone company are just being slow at updating it?

Do you have proof of the settlement?

You can (a) check with Wescot to see if the have told the phone company of the settlement yet; (b) provide proof direct to the phone company and instruct them to update the files ASAP.
