Lowell/3 Debt & Default on Credit Report

Hi Folks
Just after a bit of advice.
I got a letter from Lowell in 2009 saying I owed £86 as part of a debt to 3. Straight away I rang them up and asked them to provide me with proof of the debt by way of statements which they agreed to do.
A year later I got a letter from them saying that they were going to write off the debt as a gesture of good will (I assume they had no proof).
Now me and my girfriend are planning on moving out and I checked my credit report and found a default in Lowell's name. I rang them up and asked how I could get this removed as there was no proof of the debt.
They say it can't be removed and I need to contact 3, is this correct?
Cheers guys

It's not always that simple - I was sent back and forth between my creditors and the DCA they supposedly sold debts on to many times when I was trying to tidy up my credit report. I still have a couple of grey areas in my report that they can't agree who I need to speak to to tidy them up (18 months after all debts were paid) :eek:0 -
three will confirm the invalid debt and remove, thats unless it did exist of courseDon't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.0

No. If in their name now, then it's Lowell's responsibility.
Of course though, if you contact 3 and confirm that you never owed any such debt, then Lowells will have even less of a leg to stand on.Free/impartial debt advice: National Debtline | StepChange Debt Charity | Find your local CAB

Thanks, I just had a look on Lowell's website and they actually state that they are the owners of the default when they take over the debt!
Looks like the guy on the phone was lying to me! I will be sending a complaint email after getting some advice off a compliance officer at work.
I actually work for a litigation company but we only deal in legal work on behalf of clients . I can't ask any of the solicitors for advice...if you are found to have a default or CCJ or anything like that you can lose your job...it's one of our clients requirements so I need to act fast!
Anyways I will be sending my email off to them after having it checked and will let you know what response I get.
Thanks0
