The one from Tesco does seem like a good option with a bigger secreen but it has about half the RAM. Will that make a big difference to the speed it runds at ?
I too have a budget of £500 and so I am looking for the best deal I can get so that the laptop will be good for the next few years. Iseally I would want it to be wireless.
Any other suggestions welcome as I am not very techie in this area
I originally thought a Dell would be the best to get not really being aware of ACER"The time is always right to do what is right"0 -
17" is nice to have (as the actress said to the bishop!) but it is quite big to carry around and awkward to use on a train etc0

Check out the Acer 3053 at Tesco £369
Good spec
Try a search, there are a few recent threads on laptops including this one.
Good luck0 -

A little over you budget of 400 i know but a massive bang for the buck compared to the Acer, i have dealt with these people before they are completely on the level
Acer are a large company and are likely to have more discussions about them on the net than most other companies. They are the Dell of the Far East and produce some very good value computers.
Asus laptops from Mesh are good but beware that Mesh customer service has gone downhill in the last couple of years especially in areas where they are not too hot on, e.g. laptops.
As they simply sell laptops for Asus, sometimes if you get frustrated with customer service from Mesh, simply call Asus directly. However, Asus laptops are very good value as well.
For the more budget range value, I think you get more for your money with Acer though.

On Saturday I bought the 17" laptop mentioned by mjr600.
It was the larger screen that swayed it for me.
So far I am very pleased with it.:j
Incidentally with this Acer laptop for a fee of just less than £15 fyou can upgrade to Windows Vista when it comes out later this year.0 -
HAS THE TESCO LAPTOP GOT A DVD RE-WRITER?
ALSO, WHATS THE BATTERY TIME?
Cheers

Pauliepie,
In answer to your question, yes, it has a dvd rewriter. The battery time is 2.3 hours.
Due to its increased size it may not be ideal if you want to work on the train on your way home from work (They weigh a little bit more as well)
But it's ideal for use in the home. I love mine. :j0 -

that 17" Acer is available on dabs for £480. That lets you buy a carry case too for sub £500!0
