JSA, Vol Work & College Course...

I was made redundant about 5 weeks ago and have just started claiming JSA. I'm going to college part time course in Childcare (one day a week) as I'm looking to get into this sector after being in legal for 15 years.

The course requires me to do 15 hours in a childcare setting and I have found a voluntary position.

Can I still claim JSA, do vol work and attend college one day a week? Do I have to declare it to the bens office?

You can do any voluntary work you like while on JSA. You can also study up to 16 hours a week so your one day a week sounds fine.

Yes, you will need to tell the JCP and they will get you to sign a form declaring this. You will be expected to give up the voluntary work if a job opportunity comes along.

If you do not tell them and they find out then your JSA may be sanctioned and stopped and you will have to pay back any JSA that you have claimed whilst doing this.
