Leaving a job after training?

When job hunting I applied for 2 homecare jobs. One with my local authority, and other with a homecare group (will call them HG). My council interview was before the HG one. HG one wanted to book me in for training at my interview which I was fine with as I didn't think I'd get the council job. I went to their 2.5days of training (unpaid, and all days finished early), I also applied for my PVG through them, to which they paid £11.50 towards (I paid £47.50). I then got offered the job with the council, which I accepted. I notified the HG, and as they only offer 0 hours contracts it wasn't really a problem.

Last week HG called to say my PVG/Police check had come through, so I went in and filled out my bank details, an 'employee without a p45' form, and handbooks etc. She wanted to book me in for my shadowing so I could start asap then realised it WASN'T my police check, but someone else with a similar surname.

I've now started my training with the council, and have found that it's been enough for me - I don't want to work for another compay ontop of that, and I also wasn't very impressed with their training and comments from current staff members (or their rate of pay).

My police check has just come through with the HG now, and they would like me to go in to sort out my shadowing.

If I tell them I am unable to hours ontop of my council job now, would I be liable to pay for any training (or the £11.50 from the police check)? They never told me I did, and if genuinely do then it's not a problem, but would like to know where I stand on it.

Unless you have agreed to payments if you don't proceed before starting your training, you shouldn't be liable. This may, however be you simply signing a contract which refers to an employee handbook, and only if you delve in the employee handbook can you find the detail about what the policy is.

What paperwork in total did you sign when you went in?

    Altogether:

A form stating that I understand I wouldn't be paid mileage
My 'Employee without a p45' form
    My bank detail form
My handbook - have just read and it states that I (or the company) need to give 1 weeks notice to terminate work, but I don't know if that applies to me. Theres nothing I can see about payments for training/police checks if you leave.
    Equal opportunities form
    Medical check form
    Original applicaton form
Disclosure/PVG form (and paid my £47.50 by cheque)

I THINK that's everything. I haven't had a proper contract, but I don't know if they would be giving me one as it's only '0 hours'.

I'll pay their £11.50 back if they kick up a fuss about it, but it's the training that I'm more concerned about (It wasn't worth paying for IMO). I'm assuming that as it was unpaid that I shouldn't have to?

I would just say that you have secured a 'more than zero hours' contract which means that you can't be on call to do hours as and when so your only option is to 'resign' from a job that you haven't actually worked at yet.

If you haven't signed a training contract there should be no comeback there.

Sounds a dream - zero hours and no mileage paid. Thank goodness you got another job!

    Thank you, and most definitely!

I'm going in to see them tomorrow, so fingers crossed they don't kick up a fuss!

Can I just suggest - just double check with someone that the law on training agreements is the same in Scotland! They have different laws up North! What you have been told about training agreements applies in England and Wales - I am not certain whether it applies in Scotland.

PVG is the give away - it's eCRB in English!

Sorry everyone, I used to live in England and keep forgetting that things might be different here.

I went in today and they basically said to have a think and tell them for sure after my council training/at the end of the month, which didn't really achieve anything. But they never mentioned about paying them for anything.

The company I work for pay for the whole PVG as a part of our recruitment cost and we dont have any comeback if the person we offered the job to doesnt start and/or comes for induction and doesnt stay. Unless you have signed for the training I dont see how they can pursue you....

    (im in Scotland :) )
