I'm Giving up the Drink & Ciggies 4 3mths

Hi,

I've done this before, last Febuary in fact! (Yes, because it's the shortest month of the year!)

But this time I'm going for 3 months!!

It's a good plan because, i didn't miss a day of work, wasn't late, got not a single hangover and turned up to every lecture on time too! So, it has its benefits. The biggest was on my purse!

I'd just been to New York & spent 80% of my student loan! I had to make the last bit stretch till April!

Wow did I save!

I worked out that I spent (each week):-

£14 on wine/sprits (at home)
£25 clubs/bars/pubs
£12 cigarettes
£5 Taxis
£10 Takeaways

Now in "normal" living £66 would be a night out each week but as a "student" you HAVE to scale this down to a measly £20-25 for the whole week. I was OVERSPENIDNG BIGTIME!!

£66 x 4 =£264!!

My budget was £100!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As a mature student, I found it hard to get out of the habbit of spending as though i was still in full time employment.

So throughout the month of feb I'd saved myself £264(ish)

Probably a litle more, because I made my own sandwiches, and walked to uni( sometimes). When i drove, i left in good time to find a decent parking spot and saved further, where previously I'd been in that much of a rush after a HEAVY night out that i had no choice but to pay & display the extortionate rates. or on 2 occasions be clamped or towed away!!!

Anyway...WISH ME LUCK

K:A

  • Good luck! think of the health benefits as well! Plus if you can give up smoking for 3 months then you've overcome the hardest time of quitting altogether... then you can permenantly save money and your health! ;)
good luck either how and make sure you keep us updated on how you get on.

I wish you well with your venture - 4 years ago - I became teetotal (religion), and have not wanted (or had) a drink since. All the best - you will win all around.

Wow 4 years, Inkie, that really is good going, I'd love to say "I don't drink!"

I'll just see how the 3 months goes first & maybe when Im 30(ish) or I have kids & things..I can't imagine having kids & waking up with a hangover!

    Thank you for your support.

I'm not really sure why I decided on 3 months! I did think about doing it for a year but then changed my mind! a year seems too daunting! Pathetic I know, I'm not a raging alky or anything but I do know that I've become lazy & less focused because I party a little too hard!

I suppose I thought that by doing 3 months I'd kickstart my !!! into gear and hopefully not go back to my old 'Hardcore' ways!!

As for smoking I am stoppinf, Full stop.

with regard to alchol, If I get to 3 months and think 'ooh that was a doddle', I'll carry on.

    I'll keep you updated

Just wanted to wish you the best of luck i'm also giving up smoking in the new year. Not drinking alcohol does'nt bother me anymore having kids and not going out so often has gently weaned me of it guess, i have a drink now and then (she says with a glass of wine in hand) it's the smoking that i need to kick into touch.
