I agree with the poster who said it can depend on what shops you have available. We have a choice of Mr T's or Waitrose- and neither is cheap! It's assumed that folks here are reasonably well off - Why???? Whenever we visit my family in South Wales I am astounded at how much cheaper everything is there.
I think I'd be pleased if my grocery bill came in at £76 - and that's for two adults and two large dogs!
    Resolution:
    Think twice before spending anything!
  • I think that £76 is about average. I NEVER find any reduced stuff when I go to the supermarket, even though I have tried going at all different times and to different supermarkets, plus I have two hollow legged teenage girls to feed, and often a load of their friends too!

I have recently started buying meat in bulk online and I do think that that works out cheaper but everything is so expensive now that even cooking most things from scratch is really expensive. The only ready made thing I buy is Tesco value pizza which is £1 and I jazz it up with leftover bits and bobs from the fridge. I find that whatever I buy gets eaten in double quick time and if I home bake stuff it gets eaten even quicker. I tired freezing Twinks hobnobs and flapjacks but the kids liked them frozen!!!!

Well since the subject heading and original post says 'on food' I reckon we can assume it's just food. That would be just under £20 per week per person which isn't bad. I like to think I'm careful but on the other hand I won't touch that pressed junk like 'formed' ham or dubious budget sausages and fatty mince etc and I choose ground coffee over instant etc. All of which has a price however careful I am. I suspect I spend more than £20. Will have to tot up the food element and see.

You know how you shouldn't go supermarket shopping when you're hungry? Well, I think the same should apply to reading this board. I'm starving now - and seriously thinking about going shopping to Mr T - and this isn't even one of the recipe threads....

£76 divided by 4 is £19 per person. No luxuries, but quite enough.

I average £80-£85 per week for 2 adults & 2 hollow legged teenage boys, this includes everything from the supermarket including cleaning, laundry & toiletries, an organic veg box weekly, a doorstep milk delivery, farm gate eggs and a monthly butchers delivery. It also includes a packed lunch for DH and school dinners when they have them for the boys.
similar for me . 4 of us in our house including two boys with hollow legs. We go through bags of food each week

When I was doing the grocery challenge, I aimed for £250 a month for 3 of us (one is a toddler, but has his own special snacks e.g. rice cakes), which works out about £58 a week, although we do buy organic boxes for fruit and veg. Pro-rata that would be £77 a week for 4 people, so that figure sounds about right.
Must get organised and rejoin grocery challenge!

Which online meat supplier do you use, if you don't mind me asking? my local butcher has just changed hands and I'm not impressed by the next guy.
