Wedding Aboard?

My partner and I are thinking of getting married aboard, a very small low key do. Max 25 guests- close friends and family.

I am wondering if getting married aboard do you pay (or offer to pay) for close family members flights/ accommodation? What is the etiquette with getting married aboard? I am thinking of not having a gift/ wedding list as it will already be expensive for those that do come, and it is a lot to ask of people. But the advantages to getting married aboard is to keep other costs low, (venue/ food) and we are able to keep the guest list to a minimum.

I suggest you all take plenty of seasickness tablets with you when you go aboard :D

When my H2B went to a wedding in Barbados, he paid for the flight and the bride and groom paid for the accommodation. They had hired villas and had the wedding around the villa complex and it worked out really well.

We looked at Gibralter for our wedding in 2013, we would have paid for accommodation for that too, (flights to Gibralter weren't too bad when we looked).

I think it's entirely up to you and what you can afford v's what you would like to do.
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

    Hi,

We are getting married in Lindos next September & the only thing we are paying for will be the reception itself for people. We can't afford to offer to pay for people's flights & accommadation. We have sent save the dates to people early so they have plenty of time to decide & save up if they wish to come. We have said to people to use it as their family holiday for the year. You can get pretty good deals if you look round & book at the right time. On the wedding day we will be giving them a good day lots of food, champagne, wine & a boat trip.

I suppose it's what you can afford.
Married the man of my dreams - 10th September 2012, St Paul's Bay Lindos :jIt was amazing.

We got married in Lindos in June, we paid for the whole wedding day for everyone - food, drinks, boat trip etc - but they paid for their own flights an accomodation. No one complained - certianly not to or faces anyway.

We put a note in our invites saying basically that we appreciate the effort and expense involved in coming out all this way for our wedding, and we certainly don't want any gifts. I think this made i quite clear really.

    Good luck with it!
saving up another deposit as we've lost all our equity.

We got married in the Dominican Republic in February, our guests all paid for their flights and hotel (and treated it as their big holiday for this year) and we paid for the reception and we bought loads of champagne in duty free so we'd have something really nice to drink on the day, once that ran out it was all inclusive so no-one had to spend anything! :)

We specifically asked for no gifts from people who were attending the wedding as their gift was their presence and they'd spent more than enough.

We'd have loved to pay for everyone to come, but we simply couldn't afford it. If you know that certain people who you really want there with you can't afford it and you are in the position to be able to offer to pay for them, then by all means do so. We found that all of our guests were happy to come as they liked the excuse of 'having' to go to the Caribbean for 2 weeks, we picked somewhere that was good value for money and we gave them enough notice to plan it as their main holiday. I don't think anyone regrets coming. :)
Overcome the notion that you must be ordinary. It robs you of the chance to be extraordinary!
