I think we should will be having someone on site soon telling you that in "real" terms things were more expensive then. Personally I have found renting my sugar, milk, tea and petrol since then has worked out in my favour.

Changes in relative prices are an interest of mine (yeah I know). The George Orwell book The Road to Wigan Pier is very interesting from that POV.

    Petrol at £6.97/gallon = £1.53/litre.

It makes sense that prices measured by earnings changes should have fallen as technology has made people more productive and thus their labour more valuable.

I thought it was very difficult to measure pounds vs shillings, when looking at it the way its being looked at?

I only get this from my dad mind, as he said everyones money was devalued when it changed over. Still hung up about it :D

Measuring worth for me comes up as 4 shillings in 1964 = £3.16 using the RPI index.

To clarify the I have used the measuring worth website to estimate today’s prices but I did find a wage slip and in was for £12 a week which is £386 now or £20k . The person involve was a self-employed builder
  • Personally, I find stealing those little paper packets of sugar from Starbucks (and similar) saves on the sugar bills. Get's a bit tedious opening 750 packets every time Mrs LM has a jam-making session, though.

You should do what multinational corporations do these days: send the sugar packets to India to outsource your sugar packet opening.

Mrs LM is doing the outsourcing - to Mr LM!

I'll consider it. But I'm just a little concerned as to whether or not this would in any way render our decription of the jam null and void. We like to think of it as Organic, sustainable, green, fair-trade, eco-friendly, carbon-free, local produce, in biodegradable, recyclable packaging.

Besides, I think I'd get it done cheaper by 13 year old Vietnamese rather than in India.
