Maybe someone can help me with some advice?
I have a root fragment left after my tooth extraction in my upper jaw on the right. My dentist said that everything is supposed to be o'k. But I already had two abscesses, the right side of my face reacts to the cold, I have a constant headache and earache and when I bend down I have a feeling that a brick is hanging out of my upper right jaw.
I went to the dentist a few more times, he did an X-ray and said that he didn't see any problems. So he assumed that it was my ear and sent me to the GP. But he gave me some antibiotics that I can't take because I'm allergic.
The GP checked my ears and said that they are fine, that the source of infection is passing the pain into my ear.
I went to the dentist again and told him that the GP didn't find anything wrong with my ears. The dentist got mad and said that nothing wrong from his side and this is the ear. He told me to wait until the piece of root will dissolve by itself and kicked me out. I don't know what to do now, my headache always keeps me down and I'm scared of the next abscess.
All advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

anna

Can't tell without seeing you or your xrays. If you are worried why not see another dentist and ask their opinion. Bits of root can often get left behind after an extraction and cause no problem and make their own way out.. If there is an infection around it it may need removal.

Would agree with Brook. The root won't 'dissolve' but they often work their way to the surface where they are much easier to remove than if you try and fish them out at the time when they break off.

99 times out of 100 they give no problems, but occasionally they can. I would certainly take pain/discomfort from the area of a retained root a little more seriously than your dentist seems to have done so far, and would probably arrange to get it taken out either by me in the surgery if I felt it was straightfroward, or referring you to an oral surgeon at the hosital if it looked tricky.

If - having removed it, you still had symptoms, THEN I might refer you on to start looking for other possible causes.

( How long ago was the tooth taken out?)
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

I had a wisdom tooth "extraction" where in fact the dentist after trying to wrench my head off actually broke off the top of the tooth and stitched over it leaving the whole root of the tooth and cause of the original pain where it was. I only found out by visiting the local dental training hospital where I was told that basically the wisdom tooth extraction should not even have been attempted - I had to go for a general anesthetic in the end. If you have a dental hospital near you - I would suggest a visit there; it was worth the long wait in my case.

Thank you very much guys for all your replies! My tooth was extracted in February this year and since then my problems have began. I'll try the Dental Hospital but I heard that they don't have an open appointment system and I have to be referred there by my dentist. But it unlikely for him to refer me there because I made him mad last time I seen him. Also I try to find another dentist but I have no luck so far. I can't afford a privite dentist but there isn't too much choice from NHS. I'm really exhausted with the headache and cannot concentrate well. But I'll try to do what you suggested. xx

Have you looked at any of your nearby private dentist prices?

They're often not as wildly expensive as people fear. They do have to survive and make a living in the area - which they wouldn't do if they were as extravagantly expensive as some media reports seem to suggest.

Yes - City centre 'cosmetic' practices are generally very expensive. But an average high street general dental practice in an average town will be much more reasonable.

It's worth just checking before you dismiss it.

Follow the hints in my sig line, and just look around a few.
