Does your building firm do electrical work that would allow you to be assessed for the site based work that's required for you to do an NVQ? If not, do you have any contacts in the trade that you could use to achieve this?

It shouldn't be difficult to get on a college course (although I'd hurry up and apply now as you may be rather late for this year), it's getting the practical site experience that most people find a problem.

And don't forget to make sure that you are getting CITB grant if you are registered....
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

If you dont have a degree you could be an apprentice employed by your company as long as you could demonstrate the work being done and be mentored by someone with more experience than you. As a 45 yr old your company (not you as the apprentice) would have to pay but it would be a lot less than paying for the stand alone qualification. You would get an electrical qualification (C&G 2330 I think) plus an NVQ assessed in the workplace as well as Literacy & Numeracy as required.
