Cheap but decent USB external hard drive

I need a external USB hard drive that I can use to keep backups on, from different computers.

Doesn't have to be a huge drive, but I do want a reliable make (if there is such a thing these days).

Had a look in PC World just for ideas and they range from £99 upwards, but I've no idea if the makes were ok or not.

Any suggestions?

    Outrageous price!

I bought my 80Gb Maxtor from ebuyer about 9 months ago. Comes with Dantz Retrospect backup software too. £76 incl VAT - but shop around as you may still get it a little cheaper

Thanks DFC. That's a much better price than I saw. Maxtor is a well known make isn't it? Some of the ones I was looking at were 'Western Promise' which I'd not heard of, and 'Freecom' (shudders at the Freecom as it brings back memories of the Index printer saga, lol).

Read loads of posts about ebuyer though, so might be a bit worried about that bit. ;)

Will see if I can see the Maxtor one anywhere else.

    Thanks again. :)

or a bit of lateral thinking...what about the usb external DVD drive from Aldi at £60 ???...you can use as a DVD-RW or DVD+RW and means you can use them as 4.5gb floppy drives ??

    Yep

I have two - the One Touch USB and an internal drive. I also have a Western Seagate. No problem with any of them.

Yes - ebuyer can be hit & miss, although I've not had any problems with them.

Google gives lots of options here

Brilliant, thanks again, will check out some of those links shortly. (Need to spend the next few hours reformatting....AGAIN. :( There may be an issue with my wireless card but computer manufacturer will charge if it appears that it is a software related issue so I've got a list of things they've told me to try first. Nothing is ever easy is it??!!)

Browntoa: Good idea, thanks, but I think I'd prefer to have just the one storage device rather than using separate disks. I really just want the one moveable plug and play type thing. :)
