Hours of *work* - what's your view (slightly lighthearted debate)

Rightly or wrongly I take the lead from my boss. In my last two places of work, I've had bosses who have 2 hour lunch breaks, leave work early, faff about all day long etc.
The way I view it is that as long as I'm getting my work done, I'm not gonna be clockwatching like a mug to make sure I'm working bang on the right time when my boss is taking the mick!0 -

That's different to planning on being late every day, as your colleagues seem to be doing. We did have one chap who decided he was going to sit and read the Bible for 10 minutes at 9am, and we had to tell him this was something he needed to do in his own time, not ours.
my last job there was someone who would be late for work 3 or 4 out 5 days a week(at most 10 minutes) but it took people higher up to actually do something about it. His manager should have said something to him at an earlier point but he didnt as he is a prat. It went on for about a year id say and eventually something was said and thats whhen a can of worms was opened and he was still late but not as often.0 -
If my phone started ringing when I walked into my office at 8.40 I wouldn't wait around until 9.00 before I answered it, and similarly if I was in the middle of something at 5.00 I'd carry on and finish it.
I guess that's the difference between a job and a career..................

Interesting to get others' views! Seems there is quite a range of views and opinions. I guess none of them are right, and equally none of them are wrong.my lats job there was someone who would be late for work 3 or 4 out 5 days a week(at most 10 minutes) but it took people higher up to actually do something about it.
We have someone like this in our office too. Every morning, without fail, she is anything from 5 to 10 minutes late, and every morning, blames it on "the traffic". I did suggest to her one day she might consider leaving home a tad earlier to try and time her journey so she arrived on time. Fell on deaf ears, needless to say! She did say that she gets pulled up on her timekeeping on a regular basis - but nothing concrete seems to be done. And it's not like she's the last out of the door either!0 -
If you are paid for working 9am-5pm then you should be working from 9am, not faffing about or making a cuppa, if you want a cuppa then get in 10 minutes early and make one in your own time, or wait for your break/lunch and you should be working until 5pm, then clear up your bits.
Thats the way my staff work and thats the way it should be done, I would not expect to be paid for making a cup of tea (unless working in the hospitality industry etc)
But thats just me

I've never had the misfortune of having to work under a clock. Our work is mostly self directed and we operate autonomously. We get in when we get in and start when were ready - providing the work is completed whats the problem?Don’t be a can’t, be a can.0

9am to 5pm would be nice, I have never had a job that cut and dried....except a public sector job many years ago.0

I'd say it's up to the manager as to how they wish to run their office.
If my hours are 9-5 on office days I'm usually in at 8:15 and will often stay until after 5 to build up TOIL; but as I'm a mobile staff member I've usually done 2 hours of driving before 9am and the hours I build up give me a nice load of TOIL every week.If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
At my office we now have to clock in and out. We can start any time between 7:30 and 9:00 and contracted finishing time depends on when we start. I often go a few minutes over, but if it goes much beyond that I'll do at least 30 minutes and claim the overtime.0

I'm in the view that it should be a 9am start and a 5pm finish. I wouldn't say I'm strict in that view though, the other day I was wrapping up at 4.45pm because I had nothing in my work pile that would take less than 20 minutes to do. I've also been in early this week and my manager sits next to me, so if I've been in since 8.15am and working since 8.30am she's not too fussy if I'm not physically sitting at my desk at 9am because she knows I'm in a work frame of mind and I'll be back soon.
Overall though I think 9-5 should be working hours with a small frame of flexibility for events where employers need to go early occasionally.Thank you competition posters!
