Opinions required

Good afternoon Everyone,

I had a second interview , where I came in 2nd to the person who was successful. The feedback was extremely positive and it seems I was just pipped at the post.

My background has been working as office support personnel (admin/reception/PA) mainly in music and for the last 3 years in recruitment. And the role I lost was in recruitment also.

I feel I lost out as the Director thought my heart lies more in the music/media sector, which is totally correct. But those sectors are very popular and very difficult to acquire. I still spend a lot of time trying. I felt I was very positive about the potential role, but my work history and when they ask about my free time, obviously indicates my love for that sector.

I am probably making a mountain out of a molehill, but when good roles are difficult to get, I feel it might be something I should be aware off.

I don’t think I can totally ignore that side of my personality but how do you think I should approach it next time.

I feel that when ever I music /media is mentioned I should end the conversation positively my mentioning the skills I have acquired from my time in the music industry and how they can be transferred into the potential new role?

    :exclamatiI have to admit that maybe i am a little ignorant but as, for example, a receptionist, how much does the role differ if your employer happens to be music, recruitement or even insurance?

    All employers are worried about taking on someone who is going to leave too quickly. Recruitement is costly, as are vacancies that someone creates when they leave and in general a pain in the :exclamati.

    As far as possible you should talk about the generic parts of the job that are the same irrespective of industry.

    I wouldnt ever suggest lying in an interview but if asked if you wouldnt rather be working in X industry rather than here I would suggest you may want to say what the bits you like about the role in general are and what the good bits would be at working with this organisation (even if you want to be saying YES YES YES)

    In a way you've answered your own question here. You say you spend a lot of time trying to get back into that sector as that is where you really want to work. The interviewer got wind of that and doesn't want to take on someone who is still going to be trying to leave them ASAP.

    You need to make it totally clear that what interests you now is working in admin /reception/PA, not working in the music industry. (even if that's not true). That you are happy with music as a hobby, and that most of the work you did there was just the same as anywhere else and it was no more glamorous or exciting than working in admin in a solicitors office, for example.
