Feeling uneasy....

Ok, I know you're all going to think I'm really silly for asking this but it's really playing on my mind.

My sister has just booked her wedding for next year in the USA. My parents have agreed to pay for me and my siblings to attend (flights and accomodation) but obviously I'll still need spending money.

I'm in a bit of a dilemma because I am on a DMP and all my spare cash goes to paying off my debts and the thought of having some cash NOT going towards paying them off makes me feel uneasy. I have a year to save and I'm only going for 7 nights but I know I'll need a couple of hundred quid.

Am I being reckless if i have extra cash that isn't going towards my debt???? I plan on rejoining Avon and using my earnings from that to pay from my spending money and I'm going to look into others ways to raise the cash (selling stuff on ebay etc).

Also, will the fact I'm on a DMP mean I won't get a tourist visa for the USA???? I'm worrying if they won't let me in the country because of my debt!!!! It's my sisters wedding, her special day, she wants to marry abroad and I obviously want to be there but I just can't shake this feeling that I shouldn't be going because of my debt.

    You're not silly, just human.
I don't know about the visa sorry.
Do go to the wedding. You have a year to get the money together and plans about how you'll do it.
So, go enjoy it and forget about the DMP. I'm sure you'll have a lovely time xx

Firstly.....it's not illegal to have debts....it's certainly no reason to refuse entry into a foreign country, UNLESS they are court fines.

Secondly, I see your point about using the extra money to pay the debts and I know I should be saying don't go..BUT...you will not forgive yourself if you do not go and I would worry it would cause more stress for you. Make a promise to yourself, continue paying the same amount but use HALF your avon money to go into a savings account for your trip, use the other half to pay off extra, then you will feel better about it.

Don't be grudge a practically free holiday to USA, maybe the break will do you good too :D

I think Darnit is right, pay half and half and then perhaps when you come back you can continue with the avon thing and try and get you DMP closed sooner? xxx
Life is too short not to love what you do.
  • Hi, I'm in axactly the same situation and booked to go to Florida Easter 2012. As much as I want to pay of my debts as soon as possible they do not own me and certainly do not dictate to me what I can and can't do. Go any enjoy yourself and have a week off! I'm sure you can save some extra spending money in a year. Things to watch out for are passport renewals. I've just had to pay £250 to renew 4 of our passports and things like insurance. Don't forget the states in not like here and the nhs. make sure you have cover. enjoy. m:j
  • Thanks for the replies, I plan on doing Avon again as it fits in easily with my full time job. It was a bit of a hassle last time with orders getting sent out wrong etc but if it means I get to go on my first holiday in 7 years and be there on my sisters big day it'll be worth it!x
