College fees

Hi everyone

I am 22 with two children and a disabled partner, we live off of income support with incapacity credits, child tax credits, child benefit, housing benefit and council tax benefit.

I have just completed my level 3 in accountancy and have now been told by my college that the fees for next year will be 1250 GBP with 250 GBP to be paid in 10 days (i was told this about 20 mins ago) this is almost tripled the fees from last year

I have also been told that i do not qualify for reduced fees any more as they are only for job seekers allowance and Incapacity Benefit

I am trying to do this now so i can get a worthwhile job and support my family but there seems to be no help unless the government is forcing me to look for work.

It will be a part time course over 1 academic year is there anythign anyone can advise (have already checked about the discretionary (sp?) learners fund and I will not qualify as they have already had too many applicants for the amount of money they have) anything at all that can help me pay my fees???

Thank you

xxxxxx

My son is also going to have to pay college fees - he plans on getting a job to pay for them. Is this something you can consider?

Dont wish to be horrible but your post sounds like you have a lot given to you to live on and for your course and sometimes if you want extras like courses etc then you have to work out some other way part time job or whatever to do them as they are really a luxury that a majority of us have to pay for.

Alternatively i suppose you could go on job seekers for a few weeks, enrol on your course once youve shown your paperwork, come off job seekers if your that way inclined.

dont know of any other funds, but you could try the college fees dept for some practical advice.

What are you doing after a level 3 (which is a level equivalent) ?

Most people have to fund the next level themselves and with Accountancy would be with working ( as you tend to need experience). That is why they are part time courses.

Get a job and the employer often helps with fees.

I am afraid you college is correct in their funding. Shed loads of adult funding has been withdrawn this year and also hardship funding!

The only fully funded courses are literacy and numeracy - the rest has been pulled. Gonna be a nightmare getting a course off the ground this year.

BTW - Level 4 accounting is usually funded by an employer.

I wonder why they are saying to pay now, as I will be enrolling for level 3 and hubby will be enrolling at level 4, but we don't have to enrol or pay anything until the end of August.

Have you considered an apprenticeship? As your course fees would be paid for you and it would also give you the experience of working within the environment. I'm not sure if it's the same with the new syllabus of AAT, but I know on the old one you had to have so many hours of working in accounts before you completed the course.

Without the experience along with the qualification, I think you will really struggle to find a job (let alone a worthwhile one) in accounts with the current level of competition out there.

I just paid out £380 for Dh ECDL because it is over the border in a different county as the college there is 10 miles away but the one in this county is 35 miles away and he won't be able to collect eldest from school. Irony is, when he does advanced level he CAN get help, even cross county

The costs could be because of the level of qualification, experience has told me that varies from college to college as do concessions.

Bunnie1982, maybe they want to be sure they have the numbers for the year as most colleges won't run courses with less then a certain number of students
