Advice on what recruitment agencies do with your CV

Hello, I have been applying for jobs online by sending CV's to recruitment agencies. I know most employers use recruitment agencies to search for potential employees. But if your not successful for the job you applied for what do recruitment agencies do with CV's? One recruitment agent phoned me and advised me that I needed more experience and he wouldn't be sending my CV of to the employer and he said that "we will still retain your details on file" How long are recruitment agencies allowed to hold my CV on their databases? Thanks in advance for any help

I've not been in recruitment for a few years but last I heard they could hold your details for a year, though many realistically hold it for longer. I wouldn't sit tight with the 'we'll retain your details' thing either, because if you see a job they're advertising, either call up the consultant to say you want to go for it and/or (I do this!) reapply even though they may have your CV already. Ok, you may not get a response, but at least you'll have evidence that you applied for things like JSA etc.
There are so many people on file also, that if you see a job try and make it as relevant and specific to the job ad as possible as this will make you stand out. I'm currently looking at updating mine and I can't believe what I've left out even though I was closer to having left work when I wrote it!! It's amazing what a bit of hindsight can do.
