A good idea but don’t discard something just because it is past its use by date.

Tins, bottles and jars etc that you can store for years do not suddenly go off the day after the expiry date. Let common sense be your guide.
  • Indeed that is true! What I do, is to pull them out a few weeks bfore they are out of date and use them up. Some things keep but others do not. Bottles and jars yes, but packets and tins no. Tin breaks down and lots of the ingredients in packets litteraly turn off. Suet for example, or anything containing it, and foods which contain other fats. This is only an example. commonsense is good but some people get very confused. This is "only" a reminder.

  • A few weeks ago I was tidying my bedroom and found a bag of pasta that was 3 and a half years out of date (I have no idea how it got there). There was absolutely nothing wrong with it, and it lasted me for a good few meals.

Not that you should deliberately keep things too long, but if you do happen to find something out of date don't chuck it away immediately - if it looks and smells OK, it probably is.
