My son is being paid in cash us dollars and has started sending it home using us money orders, His request was that we bank it for him for when he comes home. I took the slip of paper, a bit like a travelers cheque, to the bank, the post office and to the travel agents bureau and none of them even knew what it was. We really dont know how to get his money from this. Is there anyone who knows how to cash these money orders and/or is there a safe and recognised way to transfer wages home on a regular basis?

If it is an international money order then his bank should accept it. If its not an international one then your probably going to struggle. As an absolute outside chance you could try either him contacting his bank - whilst they have no UK representation they may have agreements with a UK bank. Or alternatively contacting the American Consulate as undoubtably some american will have come here at some point with them then run into the issue of cashing them - of cause they are there to help US citizens so may not be willing to help.0

Does your son need the money in the UK now? If not I'd consider just keeping it in the US and bring it with him when he returns, either as cash or maybe Travellers Cheques. Alternatively if he doesn't already have a bank account in the US he could open one, deposit the money there and transfer it electronically when he leaves.0

You could always ask Wells Fargo - www.wellsfargobank.co.uk.0

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions, I treid Wells Fargo in the uk and they are "only for commercial customers" I have now taken the leap and phoned the US to ask Wells Fargo there how to do it.0

I would suggest opening a couple of PayPal accounts...one for you and one for your son. Easy peasy.Pick battles big enough to matter, small enough to win. - Jonathan Kozol0

Hi All, thanks again for your input. I have at last had some luck, sadly not with Wells Fargo, their suggestion was to cash it in a branch in the US. Here in the UK the Nationwide have said they will take it and get as much as possible for it, i assume exchange rates permitting and costs. As for transferring money, I will keep looking. Thanks again.0
