Blonde q. - new job, paperwork?

Hi all, don't know if anyone remembers but I had a bit of a hassle resigning from my previous position. Today is my final day and I've still had no real confirmation of the end of my contract. I've now been offered a temp job and they want me to start on Monday.
My old office have confirmed by email but I've not been sent any documentation or P45. I'm chasing this up and they assure me it's in the post (I work away from the office).

Is this going to stop me being able to start work on Monday at the new company? Or is there anything else I need to be aware of? It's been years since I swapped jobs so I'm sorry this is feeling like new again!

No you'll be fine - either the P45 can be handed over a couple of days later if the new employer acccepts that its 'in the post', or they can just complete the form for an employee without a P45. It may mean your tax takes a while to get sorted but that's all.
  • I'd take an email confirmation of 'legal' closure but the only other paperwork I'm aware of is receiving a P45 and these do take a couple of weeks to come through - ask the HR department, if there is one, to ask how long this might take. When you start your new job, tell them you have no P45 and they should be able to give you a form to fill in as a temporary measure. In the meantime, if the P45 hasn't turned up you can chase them.

Most companies process any leavers at the same time as payroll (easier to do it all on the HMRC website now) so you wouldn't get your P45 until your usual salary date or therabouts. You have notified the company that you are leaving, they have emailed you to note it.... what more do you need?

It's not like they are going to turn up at the temp place on Monday and drag you back by the ankles! You don't need to do anything else.

    Good luck on Monday

Thanks all. I did have quite a lot of hassle getting them to accept my notice so it's only recently the HR department have confirmed they know anything about my leaving! What a mess, but it sounds like it'll soon be behind me! Just need manager references back ASAP, eeek!

    Hi Bodmil,

If you don't get your P45 in time, you could always offer your new employers a P46 instead - that's for employees without a P45. Here's a link to the form, which you can print off yourself: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/p46.pdf.

Good luck in your new role - every success! x

a half-decent payroll section would offer you a P46 if you didn't produce a P45, generally. However knowing where to get one from if they don't offer this is quite useful!
