Fixed rate coming to an end

Hi,
Really sorry if this is an obvious post, I am fairly new to this site and not sure how to search etc.
My current fixed rate will end on 31 December 2011, so although not to soon, I am not sure when I should start shopping around for a new deal, oir if I should just stick with what I have and move onto the variable rate.
I am with the Coventry Buidling Society, the rate was fixed in March 2007, so basically just before the prices and interest rates went down. I can't remember exactly what my rate is, may be 5.9% (but may be higher).
Can anyone advise what I should do. I do quite like knowing exactly what I am paying each month, so a fixed rate is good for me, but should I look for one now and see if they will fix it, or should I wait longer. Don't want to wait to long, as I am expecting a baby mid October, and I can see that shopping around for mortages after that is going to be the last thing on my mind for the first few months at least.
