change to varying shift patterns

my OH is being told that her job is changing from a regular 9.00 - 5.00 mon to fri to a varying shift pattern including saturdays, with the shifts varying during the week, i.e. monday tuesday 8-4, wed 10-6 , frid 4-12, sat 8-4 and then a different shift the following week on a 9 week rota. we have a commute into work so this is not ideal to say the least.
is this legal? she is getting very stressed out about it.
in her contract it says some flexibility is required, my understanding from what i've read is that jobs should reflect custom but that the best she can hope for is to claim constructive dismissal?
any advice much appreciated. This is a full time job which she has had for more than 3 years but which does not have a strong union.
