To be honest, he would be better taking a bar job on a night and going back to university and learning to do the rest of the job, a dental therapist is a bit like a plumber who can only fit plastic pipes or a roofer who can only work at ground level.
Its a bit of a "non job degree" and you might just as well employ a dentist in the first place.
Sounds like its option's timeHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
Thank you for replies again. Megabus is a good idea, forgot about the cheap travel with them.
He has had a job offer at £36 an hour in Frome (somerset) and another for £33 an hour in Manchester. At the moment the manchester option is going to work better even though its a day a week less as its about 4 hours closer than Frome. Just looking at Megabus now to see if we can get him from Edinburgh to Manc for an interview.
Youth hostels are good too, and Im going to phone my local credit union when they open tomorrow to see about a short term loan to fix the car, so thanks to the OP's who suggested this.
To qualify as a fully fledged dentist is another 3 years at uni which is out of the question at the moment. I do understand therapists are not well loved in the dental profession, but he is good at his job and probably will go back and upskill to full dentistry at some point, but right now we need him to go to work and earn some pennies! Its never easy having a big career change when you're older but I do believe he will get employment as a therapist and earn good money for doing so.Stuck in a hole

Are these job offers concrete?
£30 PH with no experience at all sounds a little optimistic.0 -

Thats the going rate for qualified therapists. Job offers are not entirely concrete as he will still need to be interviewed but the message we are getting from the agencies is that the interview is more of a formality than anything as its the agencies job to place the employee and they have already vetted him and decided he is suitable.
As for no experience, its a vocational degree so he has been working in clinical settings for the past 3 years and has many hours drilling and filling under his belt.Stuck in a hole

what's your experience of working via agencies? I have to say you sound a little over optomistic based on my experience. They'll say anything to get you in front of the client. I'd ask for a telephone interview before travelling.Debt free 4th April 2007.

Thank you. Personally Ive never worked for an agency and my partner is new in the field, so I will suggest he does just that before we fork out for a bus ticket.Stuck in a hole

If you think £2000 is the amount it would take to get him to a position where he can get to interviewing, then I think that obtaining this should be the first goal. This doesn't have to mean working in a bar but could mean doing admin and temp work. I also wondered - is there anyone locally in either NHS or private dentists who would hire someone like him in a lower position or even part-time? that way, he could still work toward his goal but get the experience under his belt so that when, say in a year, he came to applying, they could see he'd been working hard to get there and still keeping up his skills.0

The exhaust has fallen off the family car and following the onset of a strange knocking sound at the front end the garage informs me that the spring is broken on one side and the ball joint gone on the other, plus we have 3 bald tyres, all in all £500 to put right. On top of that the MOT is due the end of the month and we think it will need at least brakes for that so we're now faced with an unsafe and soon to be illegal vehicle.
Sorry to add to your problems, but with 3 bald tyres and faulty exhaust your car already is illegalIf you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0
