This afternoon I was in Lush buying a gift voucher for my daughter to use in their fab January Sale. There was a huge crush as you can imagine and one till was just for cash sales. I looked in my purse and saw that I had a £20 and a £5 As I wanted a £15 voucher this was OK. It took some time as the card I wanted wasn't available and then I realised that although I had paid with a £20 I hadn't received my change. I only had one five pound in my purse. I queried this and the girl said she would have to fetch the manager. She said that as she didn't witness it (if she had I wouldn't have been short changed:mad: ) she couldn't give me my money back  I would have to wait untill the end of the day when they cashed the till up and if it was £5 over then they would know that it would belong to me.
I suggested that if their tills might not be too accurate at this time of the year especially as I already knew of one mistake that had been made. Basically it was a take it or leave it attitude and I could tell that as I was getting agitated about it so was she. I left the shop having given them my phone number and I had got the name of the manager I was talking to.
Does anyone know what my rights are in this? £5 may not seem a lot but trust me it is right now

A few months ago while shopping in Sainsbury, I was busy chatting to the checkout girl and packing my bags. Not until I got home did I realise I didn't get my £11 odd change. I telephoned the store, expecting to be told on yer bike but was told next time I was shopping go to customer service desk and tell them Richard (the Manager) said to give you your refund. As it's not too far from where I live I went straight round and got my change, no trouble.
Good old Sainsbury's then

it depends on what type of till they use and when it was last balanced. when i worked in the supermarket we would balance before we went on the till and have regualr spotchecks during the day. if a customer thought you had given too little change the till could be checked there and then and matter solved, but i guess in a store like lush it is too busy/hard to do that. just have to wait and see if they call you back'Children are not things to be moulded, but are people to be unfolded'0

Always been policy where I have worked to count the till and ensure it was over and then issue change if it was. Never known any place I worked to be dishonest if the till was over. Also I have seen it the other way round, a customer said she had given enough and the SA said she didn't so they cashed the till up and it was short. One day I might be more organised...........

I would suggest calling the store tomorrow, and seeing what happened at the end of the day.
If nothing comes of that, and you're right at this time of year, dependant on systems they dont always balance perfectly. I work as a manager in a shop and can tell you my till didnt balance today, but I'm positive noone was short changed, because all my staff know what theyre doing and we're not a mad rush kinda place.
If nothing comes from that write to their Head Office because quite frankly they would send you £5 rather than lose your future custom. And as you might say "£5 might not seem a lot", but £5 really isnt a lot to Lush, so I'm sure they'd send you the money.
If you do write in, just point out the way you were treated as well. Were you given the store phone number, did they say theyd call either way? That kinda thing...
I think just as goodwill they would give you the money personallyWealth is not measured by currency0 -
Thanks for all your replies it is 7.49 and no call! I know they are busy but to me it is important. I will phone the store tomorrow and if no joy I will certainly be writing to their head office. Like you say Lush may well send me the money.
The thing is I have been shopping with them for years (its my only treat) and was so pleased when they opened in my town instead of having to wait for my trips to London to buy things. I want to feel that I can still go in the store and at the moment I don't.True wealth lies in contentment - not cash. Dollydaydream 20060 -
I would definately keep on at them as you are out of pocket here. They may just be hoping that you will drop the matter - Dont! Contact their HO to complain if they will do nothing at store level. What time did the store shut tonight?Weight Loss - 102lb0

Have just phoned and yes the till was up :T - surprisingly enough. Am collecting the money later. They didn't ring me last night because they thought that 8.30 was too late:rolleyes: I don't go to bed that early. Thank you for your support guys cos you start to wonder if it is you who are at fault - yes I know that sounds weird. Must be part of our innate British Character that we don't like to cause a fuss:o Many thanks to you all and have a lovely Christmas however you celebrate it.True wealth lies in contentment - not cash. Glad it worked out!
I was £10 short in safeways once,I had handed them 2 notes by mistake as they were new and had come out of the purse together looking like one,I didnt realise until I got home,we rang them and they closed the till immediately, did a check and had my money waiting when we nipped back later that same day.0 -
Glad to hear that it worked out and that the tills were up - they probably knew from you ringing them that you werent going to back down anyway. Maybe the assistant remembered not giving you change etc.Weight Loss - 102lb0
