You may be right d.ross, but in the case of Central Bedfordshire, the staff are being dismissed, not made redundant (so no redundancy payments to be made). I can't remember the exact wording of the letters, so can't say for sure if the staff are automatically being re-hired, or if they are going to have to re-apply for their jobs.

It won't be all the staff. Some such as teachers will be on national contract rates and they won't be be able to do it.

The figures quoted about pay losses include loss of expenses and increased pension. The LA I worked for to pay about £900 essential car user allowance. I drove 12,000 business miles and they gave about 15 p a mile as well (could get a bit more through tax rebate but up to a yearclater). They ended the £900 and cut the rate to 11 p. I was subsidizing them every time I got I to the car.

Or more likely they need to cut costs so what is the better option, everyone takes a 5.6% paycut or 5.6% of the staff get made redundant?

The latter, I would say, as it could almost certainly be achieved by natural wastage and/or seeking volunteers for redundancy at little or no extra cost.

to the employees yes, not to the employer as they will have to pay out redundancy packages which won't happen.

Can you or SarEl explain to me on what basis employees are able to be dismissed for no reason, and if they can why doesn't everyone do it rather than make people redundant? (This is a genuine question by the way, I simply don't understand how this can be done).

I don't think it's effecting school staff. I live in Shropshire and have still been finding school jobs to apply for every week to start in September.
