with the recession in everyone’s shadow, it is hard to feel positive about employment, but with the first quarter of 2011 seeing a growth in the British economy of 0.5%, it is strongly evident that contract work is growing with it. With a hasty approach to spending, employers are looking to contractors before looking to permanent employees when hiring, meaning that the demand won’t be ceasing anytime soon.

I looked for permanent work between mid 2009 and mid 2010 until I finally found permanent work. By then I was heavily pregnant and shouldn't have waited to find a perm vacancy. I was offered a contract role and should have taken it in hindsight. Now I'm coming off my 'maternity leave' I will take anything that comes my way as all employers want to see is relevant experience on your CV.0

I spent around 6 months last year unemployed and finally managed to get a fixed term contract. Unfortunately that's up soon and I'm awaiting the outcome to see if my contract is being extended or not.
I would definitely agree that employers are more leaning towards temporary contracts and part-time work more than anything. Since my contract is due to come to an end I've been having a look around and it's definitely hard to find full-time permanent work.
I don't know why anyone would turn down a temporary contract? Surely you can continue to seek permanent work and it's better than being unemployed. I've certainly gained a lot of experience in the area I did my degree in through this contract.0 -
of course! obv a perm contract would be a better option (usually), but a job is still a job! and these days you'll find that they are becoming more and more common...0

i've been contracting for the past few years and it is true. Companies will rather take somebody on a contract as they can extend it as long as needed and we're a lot less hassle than perm staff, no sick pay or holiday pay and if we don't do the job or the money runs out they just end the contract.
For the worker, it also offers benefits. More money usually and it also means you can work further away as you're not going to be doing it for the next 10 years0 -

I've no idea what contract levels were, are or are expected to be but the quote you used says strongly evident - based on what? Without further context / information there is no evidence in that statement that contract work is growing nor that demand won't be ceasing.0
