Are there any goverment programmes to help people in their job search to move to different parts of the country? I hear the goverment talk about spreading out the oppurtunites in the jobs market as there seems to be 90% of the country in the South East. I remmember IDS talking about it when he was the PM. Yesterday I saw a position which had 750 applicants in one day.

We always used to sell everything (one time even including my wedding and engagement rings), pack what was essential and just go where the jobs were.
Lived in caravans, on floors etc (and that was with 3 then 4 kids) and went where ever DH got a job whether it was book packing or bus driving, cheese-making or pig-rearing.
We went from west to east to south west and once DH finished is admin course (can't work manually anymore, wheelchair bound) we will probably be off again to where the work is.
Then again it could be just my gypsy heritage rearing it's head.
The times we had to start over are countless.
To be honest if you want to do it you have to do it yourself which is actually better than relying on whatever government is in power to help. The only thing I recall IDS suggesting is easier council/HA house swaps for people to get work, no money or stuff like that.0 -

Must have been in a parallel universe as IDS has never been PM in this one, thank god!:eek:0 -
I'm all for people relocating to find work but it's generally best to do it with a job to go to rather than just on spec.0

Some companies offer relocation packages, so if you move to take a job they will pay you a small lump sum, or a contribution to some rent etc.
Just be wary of relocating to a totally different area - it can make life completely miserable
Before you ask, yes, I work for a bank, but no, I didn't get a bonus!0 -
Do you have any friends or family down south you could stay with while job hunting? If not, why not just start applying like crazy and hope to get a couple of interviews - if you can get them close to each other, you could always stay in Travelodge for a couple of nights to limit travel costs.0

@agrinnal, sorry I thought he was once!
@Idiophreak, I am actually down South already, the place is saturatured (where I am anyway). Luckily I am solo & I don't have extra commitments you could say, so I am quiet open.
@smartiedriver, Hey Thanks. Would rather be miserable with a job than without one.0 -

Yup, DH would shovel poop if it meant a job, then once in a new place it was "look for a better job" mode.
But honestly, you have to do it yourself, it is better off that way.0
