I jsut sent them an email with my CV, the usual brief about what I want and that. I then got a response back saying many thanks for your CV and we will let you know if anything suitable comes in. Can I come out and just say do you have any temporary positions at the insurance firm?

It looks as though the email you have received is an automated response.
If you have a specific request there is nothing to stop you asking them.Sometimes it seems that just when I think I have reached rock bottom, someone hands me a shovel.0 -

It was possibly a brain storm caused by the trauma of another post from the OP
Matt - did you actually inquire with the agency after a specific role or type of role, or just send in your CV? Because they are not mind-readers. Agencies these days do not need to chase applicants - they are far too busy chasing employers. There will be dozens of people who are visiting the agency every day or two for roles, there will be people who see specific advertised roles and apply for those that need sifting. A CV out of the blue and expecting them to do the work for you is not going to attract much more than cursory attention. Employment agencies are not there to find you a job - they are there to find employers the best temporary staff they can find, and they have plenty of those littering the office anyway. The client/employer pays for the service, not the employee, so they won't spend a lot of time chasing you when they have dozens of people lining the walls waiting. They are certainly not going to look at a CV that comes in on spec and think "do you know - he's perfect for that job over at the insurance company". You have to make some effort here.0 -

If someone emailed me and said 'what they wanted and that' [whatever that is]...I'd probably file your CV as well.If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
This was a few years ago now but I once knew of a company that used a certain agency so I called up the agency and asked straight out and started a few days later. OP it will definitely be worth expressing your interest in the insurance firm- there may not be anything at the minute but there is no harm in asking."It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice." :T0
