So it appears that I didn't hand in my P45 to my new employer when I joined - I'm guessing this makes things a little more complicated for me - can I get a relacement, its coming up a year now that I have been overpaying tax so any help would be great.
HMRC are next to useless when I call up - they say to spek to my employer, who says it should now be sorted...but it's not.
Plus i think HMRCs telephone number is expensive to call and they leave me on hold for 30mins at a time... fustrated to say the least!0 -
Its a lo=call number (0845) so its only expensive if you ring from a mobile, call from a landline its lots cheaper !So it appears that I didn't hand in my P45 to my new employer when I joined - I'm guessing this makes things a little more complicated for me - can I get a relacement, its coming up a year now that I have been overpaying tax so any help would be great.

If HMRC are telling you to speak to your employer what exactly are they asking you to speak to them about?
If HMRC have issued the correct code to your employer each time you have rung them then there is obviously some problem with your tax code getting to the correct department.
Some employers registered address with HMRC is not the same as the address of the payroll dept or accountant or whoever deals with payroll. This can cause delays in codes actually getting to the person who needs to know.
Ask HMRC how many times they have issued the code and what dates they were issued and then take that up with your employer. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -

Your old P45 wont be any good now ( because of the year to date figures ) your current employers should have got you to complete a P46 in the absence of the P45 , Im not sure if they can do this now , you will need to ask them.
Your employer cannot issue you with a tax code unless authorised by HMRC , I would however expect them to help you get this sortedVuja De - the feeling you'll be here later0 -
just rang up and have been advised my code will now be corrected and I should recieve a rebate in next months pay cheque - I make 9 months rebate of approx £1112 - does that sound right? - will I have also overpaid national insurance???
Thanks!0 -
I made it £1121 ......... but my solar calculator is a bit naff after dark!
No NI refund - the Code number only determines the amount of tax. The NI is non cumulative and just worked on pay.If you want to test the depth of the water .........don't use both feet !0 -

No you will not have overpaid national insurance due to it being calculated independently on each job regardless of "tax code" (which only applies to income tax).
For other readers, the only caveat to this is where you have associated employments.
Generally speaking, the only common circumstance people overpay national insurance is where they have two jobs which take them above the "Upper Earnings Limit" which changes each year with the budget. This is currently around 41000 .0
