By the way, give it a rest with the 'poor old lady' stuff.
As it stands, when she gets left in the lurch by the OP I'm sure people will be saying "its a shame that poor old lady got taken for a ride".

    That's how I meant it.

You can't seriously think its a good idea for the OP to borrow from his MIL, especially as you're in a similar position regarding age and experience, with all due respect.

I think it's immoral that you're even considering accepting this offer from you MIL. She's 76, any money she has saved should be for her use, not for bailing you out because of your financial mismanagement over the years. Sort out your problems, if it means selling your house, then sell it, i agree with the other posters, she probably doesn't want to loan you the money but doesn't know how to tell you. The plus of this story is that she'll struggle to get a loan for that amount so hopefully she won't be put in this awful situation.

Also, the reason she "wants" to help you is that she's probably now sick with worry at your financial situation. Shame on you for putting her in this position. She should not be worrying about it. Please tell her you will deal with it and leave her to enjoy her retirement the way she (prudently) planned it. You should not be her problem!!

  • Sell your house. You got yourselves into this mess, now get yourselves out! And apologise to your MIL for even thinking of putting her into this position. Disgusting.

No, I most certainly do not, and I believe I made that clear in an earlier post in this thread - see post # 13. The OP says that MIL has proposed this and asked him to suss out the possibilities (or that's how I read it anyway). Hell would freeze over before I ever proposed such an idea, not that any family member is ever likely to want me to.

Taking on a loan to pay off another loan is never a good idea, and doing so to pay off someone else's loan is fraught with such obvious pitfalls that I can't understand why everyone can't see this.

I would suggest that this is the last we have heard from the OP.
Or if they do come back it will be to defend their position, inform us that we are all illegitmate and no nothing of the situation.

The relative getting the loan is just papering over the cracks, surely you should be sorting out the situation on your own and stick to the plan.
