Wrong Tax Code

in Cutting tax
Hello all,
I hope this is the correct place to post this message, if not then maybe you can guide me to where I should be addressing this question?
I've just noticed that on my April payslip, my tax code has just changed:
Payslip Date
Tax Period
Tax Code
31/05/2010
2 BR N 30/06/2010
3 BR N 30/07/2010
4 BR N 31/08/2010
5 BR N 30/09/2010
6 647L Y 29/10/2010
7 647L Y 30/11/2010
8 647L Y 31/12/2010
9 647L Y 31/01/2011
10 647L Y 18/02/2011
11 647L N 31/03/2011
12 647L N 28/04/2011 1 339T N 27/05/2011 2 339T N
Since changing to 339T N I've been paying an extra £50 per month in tax, which seams a lot. If I use the tax calculator at http://www.listentotaxman.com/index.php and don't enter a tax code, my contributions are shown to be about £70 less than what I'm currently paying. So is my tax code incorrect?
I'm very, very confused by the tax codes. As I understand it, BR N was a temporary tax code and led to me paying too much tax. I noticed this and informed work - turned out they'd been missing some paperword from when I first joined them. I supplied this and my code changed to 636L Y and I was charged a lot less tax on my December payslip which I assumed was a refund from when I'd overpaid. I've googled and googled this but I've never understood how you're meant to be able to find out what your correct atx code should be. I also wrote to the tax office in October of last year but I never received so much as an acknowledgement.
I'd really appreciate any advice anyone can offer!
Thanks in advance,
Stu.

The normal tax code is now 747L, have you had a P2 coding notice ? Contact your tax office and sort it out with them, they are making loads of mistakes.0

Thanks Molerat, that's really helpful, I'll call them.0
-
it might also be worth checking your tax for 2010-11
do you have you P60?
if you want ot post up the figures we could check them for you0 -
Yep, called them, something's gone wrong somewhere as the company that handle the payments from work have apparently made up the new tax code, it's never been issued....
HMRC have re-issued the correct tax code which should hopefully sort everything out :j0 -
Thanks Clapton! Sorry, I hadn't noticed your message when I posted my last one. I *think* last years has all been sorted now (they did indeed get it wrong but after I complained I think it was sorted out.)
I do need to dig through everything and double check though. I'm about to head out so if I get the chance I'll post something up over the next few days. Your kind offer to have a look is certainly appreciated - I'm hopeless at this! :-)0
