solar pv on east/west roof

I Have a 3.76kw pv system on my south faceing roof on south coast and it is performing very well 2500 units produced since insilation 20/12/10. I have a rental property round the corner with east/west roof and was wandering if anyone had a system split 50/50 over east/west roof and if so how was it performing?

This family have comparitive stats for their South and West facing arrays: http://www.pigottfamily.org/index.php?page=solar
Not quite what you're looking for, but I'd suspect East and West arrays are few and far between in the UK.

    Hi

You can model the proposed twin-plane setup with the SMA Sunnydesign 2 software to see what the relative performance is likely to be .... http://www.sma.de/en/service/downloads.html ....

  • We have an east/west facing roof which gets full sun in the morning on the front and afternoon/evening on the back of the house (obviously). I was thinking about applying for free sloar panel installation (we've just injected some spare cash into our mortgage so can't stump up the installation fee ourselves yet) but most installers seem to specify south facing roof locations only.

Does anyone have experience of an east/west installation?

    Hi

The 'rent-a-roof' scheme operators seem to have a standard kit to install, this way they can maximise their margins. Any installation which they would consider unstandard, or in a position which would not provide optimal performance is either rejected or subjected to a charge. Having your kind of E/W split roof would need them to provide a dual MPPT inverter, this being a more advanced and higher than normal cost unit, as well as accepting a lower FiT income over the 25 year agreement, so it's very unlikely that you'll have a system unless you purchase one yourself ....

    Keep us informed ...

  • Hmm, that's a little frustrating. I'll still make some enquiries and see what responses I get. I will update this thread in due course...

Thre are charts available on the Internet e.g the greenshopsolar site which show that a 30 degr. roof at due W. will give ca. 86% of max. possible output and if it's 15 degrees S. from due W. [i.e. facing 255 degr.]then it will give almost 90% so the reductions aren't earth shattering.

Are they worth bothering with? I was approached by one, and it sounded good until I worked out that all I got was some free electricity during daylight hours, mainly when I was not at home. In return they got use of my roof preventing me from extending it and possibly damaging resale value for 20 years odd. I think installing the panels yourself is worthwhile until the gov. end their scheme. (Grossly unfair on the rest of us though.)
