Mouth Ulcers

Well my teeth were feeling ok and so were my gums until I went to the dentists for a check up a fortnight ago. Since Monday I have had toothache and this morning the one that has been hurting has now got an ulcer or something, the gum is really hurting me and the dentist can't see me until after new year.

Is there anything either natural or I can buy over the counter at the pharmacy which will reduce it ?

TIA
One day I might be more organised...........

This sounds masochistic, but I've had an occasional ulcer in the past and found that they get better and the pain goes if you crush them with your tongue.

Abscess maybe, not ucler. Try a chemist, but the dentist is what you really need.

Best thing I have ever used on an ulcer is called Frador...you can buy it at most chemists.

  • Does it hurt when you bite down? Or is it sensitive to hot/cold/sweet?

How long does the pain last?
Does it wake you up at night?

Pain is all day especially when I eat, biting hurts a lot. Tried pharmacy today and they said may be an abcess not an ulcer, GP and dentist can't see me :( Thanks Ted I'll have a look. I have been forgetting to take my supplements, hope that hasn't caused it :( The sunshine thing may be a fair point aswell, apart from walking the children to school I've been doing non stop housework and not leaving the house much in the daylight. Basically looks like I will have to put up with it but going to try the garlic. Might have to make my Christmas dinner into a soup.

If the tooth was hurting before the apearence of this thing, then I would think it may be an abscess too.

Your local PCT should have some sort of local emergency arrangements over the Xmas holiday, and they should be accessed through NHS direct.

If you are a private dental patient, then your own dentist should have some sort of out-of-hours cover. If you are an NHS patient, then it's the NHS direct service.

often, if the infection has come to a head like this, it bursts, and that takes the pressure and the pain away - but the underlying cause still needs treatment.

Keep a close watch on it, and get in touch with your dentist if it gets worse. (He should have an answerphone message detailing how to get emergency treatment).
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Oh darn, didn't think it was that but it might be, googled pics and looks more like abscess than an ulcer when I have looked, even though it hurts like heck. Only started hurting after he fiddled with it and said was a very tiny hole in so he would fill it. Might ring and get the emergency number now so I can keep it handy.

    Thanks for the advice.

    I've been Money Tipped!
I posted a few weeks ago about my son having a huge marble like bubble on his gum. I took him to the dentist and yes it was an abscess. He had a filling in November in the tooth below.
He was prescribed antibiotics for a week and yesterday he had to have the tooth removed.

:( I have had to loose a tooth which was perfect before because of a reoccuring abscess, dentist said he couldn't see anything wrong with it but thought it best to take it out, really hope that isn't starting again, I'll have no teeth left! Hope your son is ok bootman.
