Gaming Console for a beginner

I am going to buy my son a gaming console for his birthday next month and need advice as which one is best.
He will be 7, so nothing expensive. Ideally I'd like something that can be used on the PC with a handheld pad.
All ideas gratefully received

Nintendo gamecube is excellent for younger children and now it is superceded it's not expensive either.

I agree the Gamecube is the best for younger children and the games are far more suited for them.
My son loved his and he has just got his Wii for his birthday and he loves that he can also play all his Gamecube games on it - infact I cannot get him off it now!0 -
You could always combine the idea of a games console with a history lesson and get them a Commodore 64 :rotfl:

I would personally say get a Wii as its backwards compatible.
Unless the other person can find a Nintendo GameCube extremely cheaply, then I wouldn't recommend going down that route.
As for it not being expensive, that's not really true. For a console thats about to disappear you'd think that most of the games would be fairly cheap. However, with the GameCube because quantities are always distributed in small volumes, it keeps prices artificially high. Therefore its not a good idea now to invest in a GameCube given the limited number of games out there and the high prices the majority of them carry.
You get much better value with a Wii game.
