i remember helping my mum turning sheets. sides to middle, flat seam. all done on her singer treadle sewing machine. then, when they got too worn again, the least unworn bits were made into pillow cases. happy days!!!!!0

We do this in my family. Oh, and those old candy-stripers, how lovely thery were, and how hard-wearing. I'd sides-to-middle this sheet as the area around the rip is thin and weak, according to the OP and do a little pinch-and tuck on the rip; guessing the side-to-middling would take it out to the edge and it'd be under the mattress when tucked in, possibly.
A good sheet is an investment; an elderly south african friend told me about BMD sheets. Stands for Birth Marriage Deathm which is how long a really goos sheet can last for.
BTW if you evey come across Utility sheets in their cellophane wrappers with the blue ribbon going begging, jump on them with both fists. They are very good quality.Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.
