For those who use Internet Explorer 9, apparently you can now use Fanboy's adblocking lists:
http://www.fanboy.co.nz/ie.html

Fanboy's list is one of the main subscription lists for Adblock Plus (used by Firefox, Thunderbird, Chrome, and Safari). *For it to work correctly, you may have to disable other lists that may be present.

Fanboy's list is superior to Simple Adblock (which is a feature-limited trial of commercial-ware http://simple-adblock.com/ that only lets you block 200 ad requests per day ), as well as the Easy list for IE9 (which is only for privacy and tracking type blocks rather than general adblocking).

It's using the TPLs or Tracking Protection Lists feature:

    Hi RussJk!

Funny - I was wondering about this, on your advice I have been using adblock with Firefox on my desktop. On my new netbook I have been using IE9 but having now got used to not seeing adverts they are really bugging me! and I was wondering how to get rid of them!

Sorry to be dumb :o But....how exactly do you mean you can install this for Internet Explorer?

    Big thanks! :)

No worries; if you go to the link
    http://www.fanboy.co.nz/ie.html

Then click on the 'Add TPL' for whichever list you want, which in this case is the one in the top left,
Fanboy Adblock List for Internet Explorer 9

Afterwards that should be all you need to do, unless you've previously added other lists - in which case look in:
Tools > Safety > Tracking Protection, and see what lists are enabled or disabled.

It's probably best just to have the one TPL, as supposedly the Easy TPL has whitelists that can interfere with the Fanboy TPL. Had a quick test, seems to work okay :)

    Nice one Russ

Just visited some of my most hated sites in terms of ads in IE9. Not an ad in sight.
It looks like this makes IE9 a realistic option as an alternative browser.

    Thank you :T

    :rotfl:
I didn't say I was going to use it. In fact I haven't been anywhere near it since testing the adblocking.
It still comes in a distant 3rd or 4th behind the other browsers.

Out of interest which browsers would you guys recommend? Mainly for speed and safety?

Like I say I have been using Firefox on my desktop since years but thought I would give IE9 a whirl on the new netbook?

    Been considering trying Chrome?

For speed, I disable most plugins and mostly just have Adobe Flash enabled.

For safety, I use Adblock Plus with EasyList and the MalwareDomains subscriptions (http://adblockplus.org/en/subscriptions). A more effective method would be Noscript but I found it was a bit slow on my netbook. I also use Flashblock, and just whitelist youtube.com. I also browse under Sandboxie, so any infection will be hopefully contained.

After that, you can use Adblock Plus with Firefox, Chrome, or Safari. Alternatively, Opera is probably the safest overall browser, but I'm sure arguments can be made for all of them. There are those who set up IE to be quite safe even.

You can even use things like EMET to mitigate certain classes of exploits (http://www.rationallyparanoid.com/articles/microsoft-emet-2.html), but it takes too much messing about to figure out which settings result in slowdowns so I don't bother with it. Will revisit when others have done the heavy lifting, but no need with Sandboxie anyway.
