It is normal and will settle quickly. Simple painkillers help for first day.0

Hi
My son has had fixed braces . It can be very uncomfortable for the first few days until the brace loosens slightly
Taking some pain relief will help , however if by the end of the week she is still in pain it might be an idea to contact her consultant for advice .:)0 -
both my DD and DS had braces - top and bottom. The trick was to get them to take the painkillers about an hour BEFORE the braces were tightened. That way they don't feel toooo bad on their way home. Pain killers up till bedtime and by next morning they feel loads better. Couple of days later they were right as rain - till the next time. Assure your DD that it is soooo worth it - both my kids (now 25 and 21) are still thrilled with the results!!!0

Also, I used to give my son soluble paracetamol, it works more quickly.Accept your past without regret, handle your present with confidence and face your future without fear0

The total first time is always the worst! I had a really wonky tooth that didn't have a bracket on it for awhile, and then 3 weeks ago he put one on there and omg, that was painful!! Mine were tightened yesterday and i felt more pain in the evening than straight away, or after i've eaten. Can make a me feel a bit headachey too, but it does go.
Hopefully your child has some wax things to go over the brace ready for when it rubs the inside of the mouth.0 -
My DD was almost 12 when she got hers fitted - did the orthodontist not tell you to have some ibuprofen etc ready?
It will only last a day or two and yes the first time is worse, DD was definitely pale for a couple of days, though she was taking fast melts and calprofen to ease the pain - the chemist recommended iglu as a good remedy for sore gums where the metal bits rub the tender inside of the mouth.
It's never as bad again, though it is a good idea to have some pain relief available after adjustments.
The second worst bit is when the big strong elastic goes on the teeth - I think it was about appointment 4 or 5 that happened, and the orthodontist did warn us it would be a bit more uncomfortable than previous adjustments.Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

As well as taking pain killers, I would recommend eating softer foods for the first couple of days. I used to hate having mine tightened because of the pain, and certain foods would aggravate it more. The pain normally subsides after a few days.
I would also recommend the wax strips that sit on the metal to stop it scratching your mouth. It really helps them to feel more comfortable. I got mine from the orthodontist, but i'm sure they sell them elsewhere.0
