travel hampers

we are going away in a couple of weeks and its a long train jounrey.
i would like to make a hamper for each of my children to keep them busy and as a pressie pre holiday.
i have a girl aged 9 and a boy 2.5 years.
any tips would be great thanks.

my girls take their ds's/colouring/writing/paper and general crafty things/books/top trump cards/cameras a few toys and mine are 10 and 7

Yeah, I don't think you should have the actual hamper just toys for the kids to put in their backpacks. Maybe you could get one of those 'Paper Dolls' books each like this http://www.yellowmoon.org.uk/cat_id/SPECCOOL/product-Project-Runway-Fashion-Design-Challenge-Sketch-Book-Set-G456.htm or similar.

I once saw a Mum on a train with her daughter cutting pictures of what must've been the daughter as a little baby and her whole family and putting them into a scrapbook/photo album. They both looked liked they were having great fun, and I always thought that it was a great idea to keep a little one amused for hours.
