Has anyone done/know anything about the 'Step Up to Social Work' scheme?

I'm interested in hearing about it.

This years scheme doesn't open until August so I've been unable to find anything out about it just yet.

Hi,
Yes I've been watching for this too. The CWDC site doesn't really say a lot does it! I'll be checking back in August for more info. Did you apply last time? It was a written application then if you were successful you went for an assessment day. I work for my local council and have met someone doing this programme, it sounds intense!

No I haven't applied before. It seems like an interesting experience.

Googling it, all the info documents for last years programme have been removed. Just have to wait and see, I guess!

What sort of written application was it? A personal statement? I am good at those!

Hi,
I found out about the scheme at the last minute so my application was a real rush job (think night before!!) from what I can remember it wasn't a long form it asked for all the usual stuff like education etc.. and also asked what area you would prefer. I suppose the next bit was a bit like a personal statement, you basically had to sell yourself and explain why you had the qualities desirable for a social worker. I think there was a word limit on this too.
If you go on the cwdc and register they will then email you with updates as soon as there are any!

Rubyred, not sure how much you know but the scheme is an opportunity for graduates to complete a masters in social work with children and families over 18months whilst being employed by a local authority. It's like the social work equivalent of the graduate teacher programme. It's appealing because you are employed and therefore earn a (small) salary. I can't afford to just stop work and do my masters the normal way so this is a good option!
Competition for this was stiff last time, there weren't that many places!

Hi I'm actually studying on the scheme in the North West at the moment. The recruitment process is tough- it starts with an application form asking the usual questions and asking for examples of situations (for example a time you have dealt with a crisis). If that is accepted you go to an assessment day which is really full on- two panel interviews, a written assessment, a role play and a group activity. This may change next time, as we were the pilot year. The course itself can be stressful at times but is well worth it- a really good opportunity to earn a decent wage, gain a masters and a great career. Let me know if you want any more info on the course xx

We had this email sent around at work today for anyone who might be interested. Not sure it gives a whole lot of information, but might be useful for someone here.

Step Up to Social Work Programme

For those members of staff interested in training to become a Social Worker, there will be a full time Step up to Social Work programme running from February 2012. If you are interested, please talk to your manager before applying, and please note this is a very intensive 18 month programme. Successful candidates will be eligible for a £15,000 a year bursary (pro-rata).

Entry Criteria

-A 1st or 2:1 degree in any discipline (except social work). This is non-negotiable as it is a national programme.
-A grade C or above GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Mathematics.
-Experience of working with children, young people and families.
-Emotional resilience.
Next Steps

1. The first step is to complete the CWDC online application form*, in which you will provide details of your educational qualifications, work history and any relevant experience you may have. Applications will be open between 1 and 29 August 2011.
2. The next stage will involve further assessments to assess your skills and abilities. Successful candidates will then go on to attend an assessment centre. You will be provided with further details as you pass through the recruitment stage.
3. If you pass the assessment centre stage you will then undergo a number of checks. As you would imagine these need to be very thorough and will consist of reference checks, enhanced criminal record vetting and an occupational health check to assess your mental and physical health.
4. If you have any questions about the application process, particularly if you have a disability that may require reasonable adjustments at any stage of the recruitment process, then please do not hesitate to contact Stepuptosocialwork@cwdcouncil.org.uk
5. The deadline for applications is midnight on the 29 August 2011.
6. For successful candidates, the Step Up to Social Work programme will start in February 2012.
7. You can find a FAQ section at the following link
http://www.cwdcouncil.org.uk/http-/www-cwdcouncil-org-uk/http-/www-cwdcouncil-org-uk/social-work/step-up-to-social-work/faqs

At the end of the programme you'll qualify as a social worker and be awarded a masters degree. You'll also receive a £15,000 a year bursary to support you through your training.

*You apply via the on-line Application Form on the CWDC website only

Yeah, if you go to the CWDC website it is all there. I spotted it last night but didn't come on here to post.

Hi austr,
I have a question! I read somewhere that the length of the programme is determined by your previous experience/training -do you know anything about this? Also, I'm aware the programme is very full on, do you have any breaks or set study time or is it just a case of late nights and studying at weekends?!
I've sent in my application now so am keeping everything crossed! I imagine loads of people will apply!
Thanks

I wish they didn't let you know so late if you've been successful or not. Im looking at starting a college course that will lead me to employment within childcare in September if I dont find a job in the next 4 weeks. Would hate to have to leave it in Febuary 3 or 4 months shy of completion.
